Gethin Takes Inspiration From Crolla Win

Martin Gethin has taken inspiration from Anthony Crolla’s stoppage victory over John Murray on Saturday evening.

The Walsall boxer has been sparring fellow lightweight, Crolla, in the build up to his British Title defence against Derry Mathews at the Liverpool Olympia on Saturday, May 10th.

Gethin has been a regular visitor to Joe Gallagher’s Manchester-based gym in recent weeks as he and Crolla have helped each other prepare for their respective fights. Now, after watching his friend record a career-best win on Saturday night, Gethin is ready to follow in his foot-steps with a victory over Mathews.

“Anthony did really well,” Gethin told www.uko-boxing.com. “John Murray is a warrior so it was a great win.

“We’ve been sparring quite a lot of late. It made sense. Anthony was preparing for Murray and I’m getting ready for Mathews, so it’s helped us both out.

“Anthony has fought Derry twice, so he knows all about his style. That’s a big plus for me. Anthony is at the top of his game at the minute so it’s great to have had such high quality sparring. His style is different to Derry so I’ve also been sparring fighters with a similar style to him (Mathews) as well.

“I was really pleased for Anthony. He’s a nice guy and we’ve built up a good friendship. His win has definitely inspired me. The boxer beat the puncher on Saturday. That’s what will happen when I fight Derry too.”

Tickets for Gethin vs. Mathews are priced at £40 unreserved and £60 Ringside and are available Box Office 0151 263 6633 and www.liverpoololympia.com

Manchester’s Terry Flanagan, who will face the winner for the British strap next, is chief support alongside super-middleweight, Chris Eubank Jnr, and Liverpool trio undefeated light welterweight, Thomas Stalker, light-welterweight prospect, Nathan Brough, and unbeaten lightweight, Matty Fagan.

Jack Catterall, Tommy Langford, Joe Costello, Craig Evans and Ciaran McVarnock complete the packed show.

The show will also be televised live and exclusive on The Channel Of Champions BoxNation (Sky Ch. 437/Virgin Ch. 546). Join at www.boxnation.com.
