What is the value of ‘Money’ Mayweather? It’s a simple question but it has no clear answer.

On the 3rd of May, Floyd Mayweather returns to the ring as part of his 6 fight, 250 million dollar, contract with Showtime to face Marcos Maidana, a fight even Mayweather fans are not really praising; as they feel the result is already predetermined. Maidana was not the first choice for this fight, it was Amir Khan a junior welterweight who is two and two in his last four fights but who’s been inactive for thirteen months come May 3rd.

Maidana only got this shot because he beat Adrien Broner, a talented young fighter with a style people say resembles Mayweather but he’s clearly not or close to being a Floyd Mayweather. Not long ago, Maidana was out-classed by Devon Alexander, a good boxer but again not close to being a Floyd Mayweather.

Is that the depth of the talent pool for the best fighter pound for pound boxer in the world? I think not. Yes, there is a ‘Cold War’ going on between promoters Top Rank and Golden Boy but the number 1 and 2 contenders that will provide a better fight and considerable more press and fan interaction are on the other side of the coin with Top Rank…….. of course; I’m talking about Manny Pacquiao and Tim Bradley.

Lets look down the line to September 2014 – who will Mayweather fight then? The top three names mentioned are Amir Khan, Luis Collazo and Danny Garcia. If Amir Khan wins on May 3rd he will be 3 and 2 in his last 5. Luis Collazo, if he wins against Khan on May 3rd he will have two good names on this record (Amir Khan & Victor Ortiz) who are not ranked in the top 10 at welterweight and Danny Garcia, the champ at 140 coming up in weight. Not a bad list but not the best contenders for the best p4p in the world.

Other options lay in the junior middleweight division where Mayweather currently holds 2 titles, and 2 of his last 3 fights have been held. A division where he first held a title in back in 2007 when he beat Oscar De La Hoya. A division where there are more than a few challengers, more competitive than his fight with Maidana will be. Floyd is his own boss, he makes the decisions and he states he’s bigger than boxing, well then shouldn’t he try to prove it?  He has three fights left on his contract before he leaves the sport, Shouldn’t he take a page out of Bernard Hopkins or Miguel Cotto book and test himself against the best.

Fight the best in your division regardless of promotional companies or defend the titles you won and currently hold in other weight classes. His remaining three fights should count for something, fans on social media are asking for the Pacquiao fight. The forums are full of polls asking who should be next and no one is clicking Collazo or Garcia only the fans of ‘King’ Khan are selecting him.
