Robbie Turley (13-4) steps up a weight to challenge for the Welsh featherweight title, currently held by Dai Davies (10-23-2) on Friday July 11th, 2014. Turley of Cefn Fforest, is the reigning Welsh and Celtic champion at super bantamweight, and steps into the champion’s home town of Merthyr Tydfil.
Turley returned to the ring back in February, after a two year absence. It was at the same venue that he scored a six round points win over the cagey, tricky Michael Ramabeletsa. Then on May 17th, in Cardiff, on ‘The Second Coming’ show, he put in an impressive performance to stop veteran Marc Callaghan after two rounds via retirement.
Robbie explained how it felt being part of a big show again.
“It was good. By the time I warmed into it, he pulled out, so they didn’t get to see the best of me. It was a lot better than the first fight back, and yeah I was happy.
“I would have stopped him soon. I feel, I would have stopped him in the next round or two.”
Now back in Merthyr Tydfil and facing an old foe; the pair met five years ago. The fight was stopped, in the ninth round, due to a cut suffered by the Cefn Fforest boxer. The 27-year-old explained.
“We’re topping the bill, should be a good fight. We had a good fight before, I got cut early, and it was early days for me as a pro – I jumped from four rounds to ten rounds. I’ve won titles, since then, and become a champion. I think it’ll be a good fight, that I’ll win.
“I’ve mixed with better boys, won titles, had a lot more fights [since they last met] and been in with people like Carl Frampton. I believe, I’m a different fighter compared to when I fought him last time.”
Robbie is the Welsh and Celtic super bantamweight champion but has agreed to step-up a division.
“I don’t think he can make super bantamweight, so I’m going to jump up to featherweight. I would have rather fought him at super bantamweight; as that’s my weight. But, it’s a challenge and if I can go up a weight and win a title at featherweight – it will open more doors for me. It’s a challenge for myself to see if I can win that featherweight title.
“I think I’ll win, not going to go for a stoppage but I believe that I’ll be too much for him. Anything for the win!”
