Jose Sulaiman Chagnon was born in Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas eighty three years ago, and his life forever transformed boxing for the better.
From a normal, loving and happy childhood, he became enamoured with, and devoted to boxing. And he was to become one of the most important sports leaders of all time.
Don Jose’s aim, ambiton and passion was to transform boxing from a dangerous sport to a properly controlled, and humane activity. This needed unflinchingly brave and sometimes radical trail blazing leadership, inspired by a vision plus firm commitment for boxing’s long term future.
Throughout his life, but especailly as President of the World Boxing Council, Don Jose worked tirelessly to make boxing more secure, more honest and more respected than before his tenure started on December 5th, 1975, when he was unanimously elected in Tunisia.
From that moment on, everything…absolutely everything was different, better and admirable. Rules, customs and treatment, which were previously unknown in boxing became the norm. A gold standard for safety was established and to this day it’s being constantly improved.
Boxers and boxing in general owe so much to Jose Sulaiman, as well as thousands of people linked to this distinguished, kind, popular and beloved man, who’s revered as the best boxing commissioner in history.
We’ll never forget You Don Jose, and we’ll forever strive to follow the guidelines of decency, philanthropy, humanity, sparkling good humor, smiling friendship and humanity you set out, and left for us.

83 AÑOS CUMPLIRIA HOY NUESTRO PRESIDENTE VITALICIO JOSE SULAIMAN
Hace poco más de 8 décadas (83 años) nació don José Sulaimán Chagnón en Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, quien después de una niñez común, normal, llegó a convertirse en uno de los dirigentes deportivos más importantes de todos los tiempos en el mundo.
Particularmente lo hizo en el boxeo, espectáculo al que dio un cambio casi total, transformándolo de algo peligroso a una actividad humanizada, que no por ello perdió su emotividad y grandeza. El señor Sulaimán trabajó incansablemente para hacer del ámbito de los puños algo más serio, más seguro, más honesto de lo que había sido antes de su llegada a la Presidencia del Consejo Mundial de Boxeo, el 5 de Diciembre de 1975, cuando fue elegido por unanimidad en Túnez.
A partir de lo anterior, todo, absolutamente todo, fue distinto y mejor, mucho mejor. Se establecieron reglas, costumbres, tratos, que no se conocían en el boxeo.
Mucho le deben pugilistas y el boxeo en general, así como miles de personas conectadas con el mismo a este distinguido filántropo, considerado por casi todos como el mejor Comisionado de la historia y alguien que nunca será olvidado, se fue bajo un sentimiento general de los boxeadores y boxeadoras.
A unos meses de su partida, lo recordamos con cariño y procuramos en distintas formas seguir su ejemplo. Hoy rememoramos a quien fue bautizado como el “Padre del Boxeo”.
