Ringnews24.com interviews Graham Earl ahead of his rematch with Michael Katsidis

Former Lonsdale belt holder, Graham Earl found some time to talk with us about his upcoming second fight with Michael Katsidis, taking place in Australia on July 4th, 2014.

Ringnews24.com: After a career that has encompassed British, Commonwealth,WBU titles and the Lonsdale belt you are on the comeback path with a rematch with Michael Katsidis. Can I start by asking you how training has been going?

Yeah, training is going well. My trainer has done a good job.

Ringnews24.com: What has the general reception from the public been like about this fight? Would you say it has been positive?

It’s been generally positive. Some of the armchair fans have said a few negative things but that does not interest me. Regardless of what they say about it, the fight is still going to happen but the majority of the public want to see it because these fights don’t happen too often.

Ringnews24.com: Did you find it difficult mentally to make the decision to return to the ring?

No, not for this fight. It’s all I have wanted since the day we fought the first one.

Ringnews24.com: Did you see Katsidis recent fight? If so, what did you think of it?

I didn’t see it, to be honest with you. I have not been able to pick it up. I heard that he did not look all that great but he is a top, top fighter and I am expecting a tough night. I’ll enjoy every second of it and I will do what I do best. What will be will be.

Ringnews24.com: You have gone from fighter to promoter back to fighter again. What makes you think you can step back into the ring and beat Katsidis?

You have to have something inside you to box. I’ve thought about this fight every other day. I think I will be better. I have had a lengthy rest. I just want to get in there and do the fight.

Ringnews24.com: Do you have any concerns about fighting on foreign soil?

No, I love it. I will go there and show them all what I can do but I know the doubters, the armchair people will probably think I will have problems coping. But yeah, I just can’t wait.

Ringnews24.com: We, the British public, adored your fight with Michael Katsidis, but what were your other favourite fights?

Well, naturally the Katsidis fight is my favourite of my career but (Yuri) Ramanau is another one. I’ve had a lot of good fights, though. I didn’t quite get all the acknowledgements that I should have but I just like to get on and do my job quietly I’ve been blessed and I have had a great career. I’ve been in there with the likes of Ramanau, (Steve) Murray. I have never took the easy route in my life and I never wanted to. It’s my job to get in there with the best and be the best.

Ringnews24.com: Assuming you overcome Katsidis, do you have a rough outline of where you want to take your career next?

Well, my plan is to beat him. And I know that if I beat him in good style then he will also want a rematch. If it got to that stage then I would want it in Luton in my hometown and sell it out. That would be the trilogy of my career but first of all this rematch has a lot to live up to. But if it got to a third fight then that would probably be my last.

Ringnews24.com: Out of all the tiles you have won in your career, which did you consider your biggest achievement and why?

The Lonsdale belt, hands down. It is the best belt in the world. It is the best looking in the world and the hardest belt to win. I fought two eliminators for it and I got it the hard way. It is the best belt in the world in my eyes.

Ringnews24.com: Do you wish you had done anything different in your career?

Yeah, of course, but it’s all hindsight now. I could have done things differently where I could have made a lot more money but it’s never been about money. I mainly just wanted to win the belts. I have never avoided anybody but I did get a bit disillusioned toward the end of my career but I am now in a good place. I have had a good break. But boxing is my life and it always has been. I could have done things differently in the past but now I just want to enjoy what is happening from here on and look back and say I have had a good career.

Ringnews24.com: Finally, do you have anything to say to your fans out there?

To the haters, watch this space. To those that have supported me, I want to say thank you for giving me that throughout my career. Earl vs Katsidis II is a real fight. It’s being streamed live and people will get their money’s worth by watching it. Make a bit of noise!
