McLaren Cousins Reunited

Ten years since lacing their gloves together for Queensberry Police ABC, cousins Joshua and Kieran McLaren will compete together in the professional ranks.

The duo are set to appear on EJKO Promotions’ ‘The Chase’ at Chase Leisure Centre, Cannock, on Saturday, 4th October.

Light welterweight prospect Josh will be looking to take his professional record to 5-0 while Kieran will be launching his own career, also at light welterweight, in the paid ranks.

The boxing cousins can’t wait to be reunited.

“Kieran’s more like a younger brother to me rather than a cousin,” explained Josh to www.uko-boxing.com. “We spent a lot of time together as kids and are still best of friends now. We both have our own social circles but still see each other from time to time outside of the gym.

“It will be great to box on the same show. We did it a lot in the amateurs and, to be honest, I used to get more nervous when he was about to fight than I did for my own!”

“I’m really pleased to be making my professional debut on a show with Josh,” added Kieran. “It’s nice to have us both boxing together. There are similarities between us, particularly in how we both box. I’ve watched his fights since he turned pro and he’s made a great start in the pro game. I definitely want to emulate that start.”

The pair train out of the Fight Factory Gym in Longton and have enjoyed regular sparring sessions in the build up to their October appearance.

Kieran will go toe-to-toe with a boxer at the other end of the spectrum after it was announced today that he would be the man to face Kristian Laight in what will be the Nuneaton veteran’s 200th professional fight.

“Training has been going really well,” continued Kieran. “My opponent has just been switched to Kristian Laight. He’s as experienced as they come, so it’s a good test for me.

“I’ve been sparring with Josh and some of the other lads in the gym, which obviously helps.

“I know everyone says camp has been great but that is the case with me,” confirmed Josh.”I always look to learn in between fights and work on different techniques and tactics and that is exactly what I’ve done for this fight.

“I’ve been doing a lot of technical work in sparring; having conditions set so I can work on specifics. I’ve done a lot of work with Grant Cunningham, who is looking extremely sharp and well prepared for his title fight. I don’t know lots about my opponent (Jamie Zaszlos) but it’s about what I do in there.

“Kieran and I are ready. We’re looking forward to doing our family and friends proud!”

‘The Chase’ is headlined by Stafford’s Grant Cunningham taking on Kieron Gray in a British Bronze Masters Title fight whilst Stoke super middleweight pair Mark Till and Marcus Le Doux go head-to-head in a local derby battle .

Chester light welterweight, Nathan Clarke, completes the undercard against Trowbridge’s ‘Dirty’ Dan Carr.

‘The Chase’ takes place at Chase Leisure Centre, Stafford Road, Cannock, Staffordshire, WS11 4AL.
