Gethin Steps Up

Martin Gethin has set his sights on becoming a two-weight British Champion after making the decision to step up to light welterweight.

The Walsall boxer has campaigned at lightweight throughout his 31-fight professional career that culminated in him being crowned British Lightweight Champion in January 2013.

Since then, the 30 year-old has suffered a hat-trick of defeats at the fists of top class opposition in Ammeth Diaz, Derry Mathews and Terry Flanagan respectively.

Now, after marrying his long-term partner, Sherilyn, the father of two feels the time has come to campaign at light welterweight and has set his sights on another Lord Lonsdale strap.

“I want to be a two-weight British Champion,” Gethin told www.uko-boxing.com. “I’ve been a lightweight since my teens and now the time is right to step up.

“It’s become harder and harder to make lightweight and I think that I’ll be stronger and sharper at light welter.

“I’m still ambitious and I look at the British light welterweight scene and think I can be a force. I’ve held a British Title at lightweight and I want one at light welter.

“I’ve been training for a few months and feel comfortable at the weight. I’m ready to go again and cause a few waves in the division.”

Gethin will begin his assault at light welterweight when he takes on Brighton’s Kevin McAuley at the Coventry Hilton Hotel this Saturday, 6th December.
