Quigg targets summer return

Scott Quigg is aiming to return to the ring next summer following successful surgery on a hand injury picked up in his WBA Super Bantamweight title defence against Hidenori Otake in Liverpool last month.

The Bury man has enjoyed a fruitful 2014, defending his World title on three occasions. In April South African danger man Tshifhiwa Munyai was sent packing in just two rounds, and in September Stephane Jamoye lasted only three rounds. In Liverpool last month Quigg completed his year with a wide points win over Hidenori Otake.

However, during that fight he suffered a tear to his extensor hood tendons in the middle and index knuckles of his right hand. He had been due out in Manchester in March but will now have to wait until the summer to return to action.

“Obviously it’s disappointing not to be able to fight on March 28,” said Quigg. “But I’ve had a great run of five fights in 18 months, four of them being World title fights.

“The rest will probably do my body good and then I will be looking to come back with a huge fight in early summer.”

Promoter Eddie Hearn added, “We are disappointed for Scott that he cannot fight in March but we wish him all the best in his recovery.

“When he is back to full fitness there are some huge unification bouts out there for him, and I am sure that despite this setback 2015 will still be a huge year for Scott.”
