Jay Metcalfe – son of former WBU world champ Shea Neary – will need to be on top of his game when he takes on William Warburton this Saturday (March 21) at Liverpool’s Olympia.
‘Dangerman’ Warburton has already shattered the dreams of a number of talented fighters and will be determined to break the heart of Metcalfe when they meet for the International Masters light-middleweight title in Metcalfe’s home city.
Warbuton has lost 72 of his 92 bouts but the Atherton man has only been stopped twice and is a far better fighter that his record suggests. The 27-year-old has victories over a number of fighters with winning records and recently retired talented amateur Lewis Rees from the sport after beating the Welshman in an upset last year.
“Warburton is a test for anyone and Jay cannot afford to be anything other than 100 per cent in this fight,” explained promoter Steve Wood. “This is a real banana skin for him and we’re expecting Warburton to give it a real go to try and take his scalp.
“Jay is unbeaten in eight though, and we think he could go on to achieve as much as his dad did. The guarantee is that this fight will be a very lively affair, we hope there won’t be an upset, and boxing fans can watch it live and completely free on vipboxing.tv.”
After putting on a huge 15-fight card in Manchester last weekend, VIP Promotions are bringing another value-for-money show to Merseyside. The Metcalfe-Warburton contest tops a 13-fight bill with fighters from across the North West getting the chance to appear in front of a big crowd, as well as the VIP cameras.
“Last week’s card was massive, there were some terrific fights and this is another really good show for the fans,” continued Wood. “We’re keeping the prices low even though we’re putting on more fights, and the feedback from the fans has been great.
“We’re also helping out other promoters and giving their fighters a chance to appear on our cards. We had boxers from Frank Warren and Dave Coldwell’s stables on the Manchester show last week, and we’ve got a couple of Frank Warren’s fighters on this Liverpool bill. It’s all about working together and the fans get all the benefit, which is great.”
VIP Promotions presents an evening of boxing at Liverpool’s Olympia on March 21.
Appearing from Liverpool will be Jay Metcalfe, Adam Ismail, Colin Farricker, Joe Tonks, Tom Farrell, Steve Brogan, and Ryan Moorhead. Also on the card are Rock Ferry’s Wayne Adeniyi; Birkenhead’s Sean Dodd; Astley’s Declan West; Holyhead’s Mark Evans; and Ellesmere Port’s Matty Fagan and Mason Cartwright.
Tickets, priced at £30 (General) and £50 (Ringside), are available from all boxers or at VIPBOXING.TV
The show will also be streamed live and free at www.vipboxing.tv – in association with 666bet.com
