Daniel Jacobs becomes the first to stop Caleb Truax

28-year-old Daniel “Miracle Man” Jacobs, successfully defended his WBA World middleweight title at the UIC Pavilion, Chicago, Illinois, USA against
Osseo, Minnesota’s Caleb “Golden” Truax. The champion from Brownsville, New York registered a twelfth round stoppage in a bout shown live on Spike TV’s Friday Night Lights Out.

Both men fought out of the orthodox stance, though Daniel switched a few times in the contest. The bout was slow-paced and it was the superior technical gifts of the New Yorker that won round after round. The champion also brought the greater power to the bout and this was overall a comfortable defense of the title.

Jacobs stepped up the pace and intensity in the sixth and, by the end of the round, was having significant success against the challenger. The defending champion hadn’t been past six rounds, since his well documented battle to overcome cancer. Truax had fully recovered for the seventh round, and indeed had some success but was becoming more open and Jacobs harder shots, caused blood to flow from the challengers nose.

Round 10, saw Truax land his best shots – a right uppercut, right cross combo, that more than caught Jacobs attention. However, it was the champion who finished the strongest. Another milestone was reached by the “Miracle Man”, as the bell to sound the eleventh was the first time he had been past ten rounds.

The fateful twelfth, and it looked like we were heading to the scorecards but then Daniel Jacobs landed a razor-sharp left-right combo and the ropes stopped Truax from going down. Referee Dr. Dave Smith, rightly issued a standing eight count. The end was soon coming, as the champion jumped on his shaky, dazed foe and the follow-up salvo of punches in bunches prompted the referee to stop the bout. Truax has never been off his feet but suffered his first professional stoppage loss.

Daniel Jacobs record is now an impressive 29-1, 26 KOs and there is talk of a clash with Peter Quillin at the Barclays Center, New York – a bout that would likely sell-out there. 31-year-old Caleb Truax must now go back to the drawing board and his respectable record falls to 25-2-2, 15 KOs.
