Middleweight prospect Aaron “Heavy Metal” Coley (10-1-1 6KOs) of Hayward, CA returned to his winning ways by beating tough veteran Yosmani Abreu who has been offering prospects all they can handle up until this point in his career. Coley who earned an unanimous decision winning every round of the six round fight was pleased with the performance, but not completely satisfied.
“I just based it on being me, doing my own stunts, instead of just running around boxing, I wanted to stay in the pocket, slip and get my work in.” Coley said after the fight when reflecting on the bout. Even with the victory, Coley was critical of his performance in certain regards “…I was landing as clean as I wanted to, I dominated, but I didn’t dominate the way I could have.”
Coley’s coach, famed trainer Eddie Croft and owner of B St. Amateur Boxing Club in San Mateo, CA also gave his thoughts on Coley’s performance. “Aaron [Coley] fought well, he fought a smart fight, [Coley] is really hard to hit clean….I thought Aaron won by a wide margin and fairly easily.” Croft continued that as his coach he hopes to see Coley improve on certain aspects of his game that could help him get fighters out of there before the aforementioned distance of the fight elapsed.
Coley, who has been sparring with Andre Ward for the past two camps was fighting on the undercard of the future Hall of Famers’ card for the first time. Coley should be returning to the ring at some point this summer with nothing being official yet.
