Upcoming Fights
Promoter Greg Steene has a card at the O2 Academy, Bournemouth, Dorset this Saturday, July 4th featuring three Welsh boxers. St. Joseph’s Gym, Newport boxer Mitch Buckland takes on Ally Black of Kirkintilloch, Scotland, in a meeting of unbeaten prospects. 22-year-old Buckland is currently undefeated in eight, while Black is unbeaten in five contests. The contest is in the Super-Lightweight division.
It will be Mitch’s second contest of the year, at the same venue, after his his six round points win, over Italian Victor Edagha back in April.

Former Welsh Super Welterweight champion, Jerome Samuels (5-6-0) is on the comeback trail. He’s signed a new contract with promoter Greg Steene and is back with trainer Richie “Shadow” Garner. Samuels faces Michael McKinson, an undefeated southpaw from Belfast, Northern Ireland. McKinson is yet to to score a knockout in his five winning contests. Known as “The Problem”, it’ll be up to Newport’s “Comeback Kid” Samuels, to solve the southpaw puzzle and return to winning ways.

In a Super-Bantamweight contest Newport’s Darren Pryce (0-8-2) takes on undefeated Guildford, Surrey boxer Thomas Kindon (4-0). 20-year-old, orthodox Kindon, is known as the ‘Pocket Rocket’ and has one KO in four winning contests.

‘The Kid’ Craig Kennedy dropped Courtney Fry twice, in the fourth round, and then went on to win a unanimous points decision, over the veteran. The ten round contest was an eliminator for the British Cruiserweight title.
The Sanigar Events promotion hosted nine contests, with Gary Buckland, Morgan Jones, Robbie Turley and Nathan Thorley among those winning.

Deeside’s “Dazzlin” Tom Doran scored a fifth round TKO over Warwick’s “Mighty” Mike Byles. Tom Doran weighed above the Middleweight limit and took his record to 15-0, 5 KOs. The win over Byles, was his fifth straight since returning to the sport in 2014, after a three year absence. The contest took place on the Sky Sports televised show, that was headlined by Callum Smith vs Christopher Rebrasse.

Cardiff’s Frankie Borg (9-5, 3 KOs) suffered a ninth round defeat against local boxer Ben Davies (7-2-1, 4 KOs). The bout was enthralling and action packed. Borg was down in the first and ninth rounds and also had a point deducted in the fifth.

Having his 74th professional contest, Aberystwyth’s Jamie Ambler lost via points against Yorkshireman Tomi Tatham (8-1, 3 KOs). Ambler had fought the week before, losing over four rounds to Joe Jackson Brown in Grays, Essex. The bout with Tatham was once again over four rounds and both weighed above the Light heavyweight limit of 175lbs. Amblers record reads 11-61-2, 3 KOs.

Former WBO Light Heavyweight champion, Nathan Cleverly has announced his next fight. It had been widely thought that he would get a shot at, current WBA holder, Juergen Braehmer in Germany. Instead, the Cefn Fforest man will travel to the US, to face highly rated contender Andrzej Fonfara (27-3, 16 KOs). Poland’s Fonfara conquered Julio Cesar Chavez Jnr, in his previous fight, via ninth round stoppage, but failed in his own World title challenge when taking the powerful Adonis “Superman” Stevenson, the full twelve rounds back in May 2015. A win for Nathan Cleverly will put him at the very top of the rankings.

“Rok’n’Rolla” Chris Jenkins (16-0, 8 KOs), finally gets the chance to win the British Super-Lightweight title, on July 18th, at the Manchester Arena. The Cwmgors boxer has been hit by opponents pulling out and also illness, so it’s great to see him back, fully fit and raring to go, after a ten month absence. His opponent for the vacant title, Tyrone Nurse hails from Huddersfield, Yorkshire and has an impressive record of 31-2, 6 KOs.
The Sky Sports televised Matchroom card, will be headlined by Scott Quigg vs Kiko Martinez and Anthony Crolla vs Darleys Perez.

Lee Churcher (12-3-1, 3 KOs) has had two wins in 2015, and has lined-up a big fight on the 15th August at Lagoon Leisure Centre, Paisley, Scotland. His opponent is the highly regarded Craig McEwan (22-4-1, 11 KOs), who has fought Andy Lee and Peter Quillin and holds wins over Brian Vera and Darnell Boone. It will be McEwan’s first fight in over a year, since a surprising defeat to Dashon Johnson in December 2014. The middleweight contest is commissioned by the MBC.

Tune into BBC3 on Monday, July 6th, at 9pm for a brand new documentary, on the new IBF Featherweight champion, Lee Selby.

If you are an ex-boxer or keen follower of the sport, please take the time to support the Welsh Ex Boxers Association, who hold a monthly meeting at the Taff’s Well Ex-Servicemen’s Club, Taff’s Well, CF15 7QD, 7pm for 7.30pm start, normally on the first Tuesday of every month. Membership is only £5 per year. New members welcome, boxers amateur, or professional, trainers, assistants and supporters of the sport all welcome. The July meeting will be held on Tuesday, 14th July.
