Chavez Jr. Be Thankful…

In a land of sinners, it is somewhat easy to be forgiven. Most people will foster the need for the second chance-the third chance-the fourth chance, as Michael Stipes would sing for REM in Strange Currencies. The world loves a failure turned into a success. However, after a while if there is no significant recourse, or even glimpse of acknowledgement to the offense. It becomes increasingly harder to grant pardon to the behavior and will even leave the most reckless beings shaking their heads in disbelief.

To state that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has discipline issues is a gross understatement. An apology from Chavez Jr. for his behavior before or after a fight is almost as certain as a beautiful woman parading a round number. From diuretics to pot, or just plain being overweight, if his name is on upcoming card get ready it’s coming. But, like most fans up until Chavez Jr. stepped on the scale for an already adjusted weight a half a lb. over against Marco Reyes he had been somewhat easy to forgive. However, just like Dylan “I used to care but hings have changed.”

Not making weight in a professional fight shows a lack of respect for the craft itself. It is an insult to the fans of the sport, the promotional company that is handling the affair, and most important the competitor that agreed to the terms of the contest. The agreed upon weight is the great equalizer of the sport. For a fighter to repeatedly have problems with this important aspect of boxing is evidence of the small value they place on the above parties.

In fact, if Chavez Sr. had not fought wars in the ring, this behavior would not have been tolerated this long, but he did and the drama of his son is something fans must endure.

To be certain the reader understands, this piece was not generated out of hate but more of a sad frustration. Garcia is a wonderful trainer and Julios father Chavez Sr. is a legend of the ring. There is nothing more that I wanted to see than the failure turned success. Unfortunately, for Chavez Jr. just like before this time wasn’t the charm and I am left shaking my head in disbelief, wanting to forgive, and finding it hard to move on.
