Amir Khan disappointed but has plenty of options

The WBC’s No.1 ranked contender Amir Khan will have to wait for his shot at the current title-holder, Floyd Mayweather Jr. “King” Khan has been looking for a shot at the P4P No.1 for sometime and the wait isn’t over. Floyd announced this week that he will be fighting Andre Berto on September 12th, 2015 at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas.

Floyd’s fight against Manny Pacquiao counted as his mandatory, so he is not obliged to meet the current No.1 contender until May 2016. It’s thought that the Berto fight could be his last, so Amir Khan may well never get his dream payday but would be in line to contest the vacant belt.

Following the official announcement of Floyd Mayweather vs Andre Berto and to deal with a number of interview requests for comment which have come through Amir Khan has released the following statement:

“I’m disappointed not to have got the fight for what is the third time after having been one of the frontrunners. However, there are many big fights out there for me and I’m going to continue working hard to establish myself at the top of the welterweight division. Floyd Mayweather has fought the biggest names throughout his career and has earned the right to face whoever he chooses. I wish my stablemate Andre Berto and trainer Virgil Hunter the very best of luck in the fight. I have seen how hard Andre trains and works and know that he is ready to give Floyd a very tough night.” – Amir Khan

Amir (31-3, 19 KOs) hasn’t got his dream fight and needs to get on with fighting the best in his division. Rematch Danny Garcia and Lamont Petersen or take on Errol Spence Jr., Manny Pacquiao, Tim Bradley (WBO champion), Brandon Rios, Shawn Porter, Diego Chaves or Marcos Maidana.

Adrien Broner, Keith Thurman (WBA champion) and Kell Brook (IBF champion) have all expressed a desire to fight Khan and the fans would welcome these contests. The options are endless, Khan needs to concentrate on the other names in the division rather than following Floyd around.
