Manny Pacquiao may be looking ahead to a rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr but promoter Bob Arum has suggested that the Filipino could fight Britain’s Amir Khan first.
The Bolton fighter has been approached about such a clash. And he is open to the possibility. But is it the right fight for Pacquiao now?
Khan was last seen in the ring dealing with Chris Algieri, an encounter that was made to be hard work for him, but he did show flashes of brilliance, especially the speed and combinations he sometimes put together. Pacquiao has always had problems with non pressure fighters. And it could be said that Khan is one. But he has a lot of athleticism about his style which can cause problems.
Ever since fighting Antonio Margarito, Pacquiao has not really been able to show that type of blast of energy that once overwhelmed the likes of Oscar De La Hoya, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera. He was forced to go the distance with a heavily damaged Shane Mosley, with the consensus thinking that he lost to Juan Manuel Marquez in their third fight. He was knocked out cold in their fourth meeting but did rack up a few acceptable wins over Brandon Rios and Chris Algieri. But something had always been missing throughout that segment of his career.
Khan is still hoping to get his shot with Floyd Mayweather although ‘Money’ is fighting Andre Berto in supposedly his last fight in September. But beating Pacquiao, especially if convincingly, will make the American audience stand up and take notice. And maybe Mayweather, himself, too! Khan has stated that he would use the same fight plan that Mayweather used against Manny. But does he have the patience for that considering he was drawn into a fight with Algieri at times? It is doubtful. The one thing that he has that Manny now probably does not is hunger. Pacquiao has been there and fought the big names, including the largest in Floyd. Amir is still looking to claim greatness.
When one thinks in detail about this fight it is an intriguing one. Even Manny’s power is not that much evident anymore! And with Khan’s dubious punch resistance it is unpredictable. He would either get caught cold or flood Manny with combinations while using the ring to keep out of harm’s way. He has managed to do that before.
And that is no longer an unthinkable outcome.
