Tyson Fury New King Of Boxing – Get over it!

Tyson Fury

Tyson Fury is the Heavyweight Champion of the World. The 6’9 British Giant earned this status with a unanimous decision victory over Wladimir Klitschko. It was the first time Klitschko tasted defeat by way of a decision, and is considered one of the biggest upsets of 2015.Tyson is now King of the boxing world, and should be celebrated. On the contrary, Tyson Fury is being ridiculed for his spirited performance.

While it may be true the fight itself was not great – the twelve round stanza did nothing to make us forget classic heavyweight showdowns like Marciano vs. Walcott, Holmes vs. Norton & Bowe Vs. Holyfield. Fury’s effort and desire to win was not compromised, and no less, than these aforementioned champions. For that we should be giving him a standing ovation instead of desecrating his very existence.

Fury has aspired to be the Heavyweight Champion of the World for as long as he can remember. Ever since he was a little boy, his parents gave him the name Tyson, boxing was embedded into his brain as a way of life. How many of us can tell that story and end it with a championship title? Fury waited a long time to get a title shot and always kept busy. How many of us can say we have stuck with something even when it got most difficult? As difficult as boxing?

When Fury’s time came, he tipped the scales at the lightest weight he has been in years. Taken full advantage of the opportunity he has longed for. In an age where fighters have discipline issues with making weight, Tyson Fury stepped up when it mattered most. While the fight itself was not tantalizing, Fury’s story is, and he should not be considered a joke.

And was the fight really that bad? We have put up with worse, or at the very least, just as bad. Whether it has been a long and boring decision, or a disgusting mismatch, the Heavyweight division has a long history of these kinds of fights. Fights that were no better than Saturdays showdown, and, in many cases much worse. For a group of people who cannot let go of yesterday, boxing fans have a very short memory in certain circumstances.

Tyson Fury is also a great character. Brazen enough to showboat against an accomplished champion, and brash enough to hold his own American Idol audition after the fight, Fury brings a flare to the ring and a desire to be great. That is just what the Heavyweight Division is lacking. While he may not be as graceful as an Ali, or a Leonard, how can he be faulted for imitating what boxing’s fans and media have shown to embrace and love? As humans are we not supposed to emulate what has been perceived as celebrated and successful? Tyson Fury is just trying to show the same flare and relaxation in the ring that has been so revered over the years.

Now that Fury is champion, an opportunity for more interesting fights is in the air. Fury seems determined to honor Wladimir’s rematch clause, another action that should be seen as positive; honoring a contract. Assuming he gets passed that test, Fury versus any top rated heavyweight is intriguing. Fury has enough flaws, in his game, to make any fight competitive. He also has the desire, physical stature, and yes, skills, to make any fight competitive, if not exciting. The Heavyweight Division is in much better shape than it was last week. This holds true even if Wladimir Klitschko shows he can bounce back in a rematch.

I was told once before I should not insult the fans. So, I try and take that advice. However, what I have seen being written on social media about Fury after this fight makes that, to quote a great movie, “an impossibility”

If all you have to say is negative things about Tyson Fury- a man who set out to do something at a very young age, something a small percentage of people have ever accomplished, and did it. A man who has shown a love and dedication for the sweet science, a desire to make being champion meaningful…if all you can say is how much he sucks…well then I have to say boxing fans are not what they use to be either.
