The final press conference for this weekend’s WBO middleweight title clash between 31-year-old Irish warhorse Andy Lee and the undefeated Billy Joe Saunders was held this afternoon.
Lee is coming off of a draw with Peter Quillin in Quillin’s home city of Brooklyn, and is making the second defense of a title he won with a come-from-behind knockout over Matt Korobov in the sixth round.
Saunders is taking another step up in competition. His first twenty-two bouts have been all wins, the best of which coming against countrymen Nick Blackwell, Matthew Hall, John Ryder, and Chris Eubank Jr. Billy Joe Saunders won the EBU middleweight title with an eighth round knockout over shifty Italian Emanuele Blandamura in July 2014, and handed future world title challenger Jarrod Fletcher his first loss.
This match-up headlines a huge night of boxing at the Manchester Arena this Saturday. Boxnation will broadcast it across Britain, while Showtime has purchased TV rights in the US.
