Amanda Serrano’s Broadway Blast

Female Knockout sensation Amanda Serrano headlined Lou DiBella’s Broadway Boxing Wednesday and did not disappoint. Serrano made quick work of Olivia Gerula to capture the WBO Female World Featherweight Championship. Serrano hurt Gerula early in round one with a sledging right hand, delivered with pinpoint accuracy from Serrano’s southpaw stance. Referee Ricky Gonzalez ruled that the ropes kept Gerula from going down from the punch and ruled it a knockdown. Gerula took the eight count and Serrano kept the pressure on landing devastating right hooks to Gerula’s cranium, hurting the Canadian fighter  several times. With Gerula helpless against the ropes, Referee Ricky Martinez called a halt to the bout inside of two minutes of round one.

The packed crowd at BB Kings Bar & Grill were in a frenzy as Serrano spoke with Steve Farhood, explaining that she is not sure how to explain her freakish power. Serrano improves to 26-1-1, 19 KO’s while Gerula falls to 17-16-2, 3 KO’s. With Heather Hardy & Shelly Vincent ringside; Amanda Serrano continued the excitement that is female boxing. This crop of talent should put female boxing in the forefront of the sweet science sooner rather than later. Nobody is doing more for female boxing than DiBella & Broadway Boxing at this stage of the sport. The rest of the boxing word should follow suit.

The co-feature saw Shemuel Pagan stop Oscar Santana with a powerful left upper at 51 seconds of round two. The uppercut stopped Santana in his tracks, Pagan followed the shot with a flurry of punches, landing with minimal damage, the left uppercut did all of the damage and sent Santana to his knees. Pagan improves to 7-0, 4 KO’s, while Santana falls to 4-4-1, 2KO’s.

Lightweight Pavlo Ischenko was unimpressive with a unanimous decision victory over Rafael Vazquez. Ischenko followed Vazquez around for much of the six round stanza. While he did land some impressive left hooks and right hands to Vazquez’ head, his jab was nonexistent and his body work was minimal. Vazquez hurt Ischenko in round two with a right hook landed from the southpaw stance. Vazquez did some decent work from the southpaw stance, however he was inconsistent with it. Scores read in favor of Ischenko 60-54, 59-55 2X, RingNews24.com scored the bout 59-55 for Ischenko. Ischenko improves to 3-0, 2 KO’s, while Vazquez falls to 2-4, 0 KO’s.

Popular Lou DiBella prospect Johnathan Alonso had a good showing against the gritty Ricardo Maldonado. The undefeated 140-pounder from Madrid, Spain earned a hard fought decision against a counter puncher who showed resistance. Alonso got caught with a counter right early in the fight, Alonso closed the first round well with flashy combinations and fed Maldonado a steady diet of three and four punch combinations throughout the six round stanza. Alonso showed a nice array of uppercuts and body shots, behind a fluid jab. Scorecards read 60-54, 59-55 2X for Alonso, ringnews24.com scored the fight 59-55 for Alonso. Lou DiBella is very high on this young prospect and has every reason to be.  One flaw Alonso has to work on is he tends to get caught with shots when he sticks around to admire his work. As he steps up in competition, this is one tool that must be removed from the toolbox. Alonso improves to 8-0, 4 KO’s, while Maldonado falls to 5-5-  0 KO’s.

The night began with another prospect from Kazakhstan Daruen Yeleussinov, as he made quick work of Bernard Thomas. The impressive Super Middleweight southpaw blitzed Thomas with a strong body attack and dropped Thomas in round one with a right hook. After taking the mandatory eight count, Yeleussinov sent Thomas to the canvas again with another picture perfect right hook, this time the bout was halted at 1:50 seconds of round one by referee David fields. Yeleussinov improves to 5-0, 4 KO’s, while Thomas falls to 5-3, 3 KO’s.

The next installment of Lou DiBella’s Broadway Boxing will take place on March 30th. The Main event is a dandy as undefeated Christopher Galeano takes on upset specialist Devaun Lee in a middleweight bout. Lee upset undefeated prospect Ian Green last time out and now sets his sights on the popular Galeano.
