Crossroads For Gethin

Walsall’s former world title contender Martin Gethin knows he is at a crossroads in his career as he looks to make up for a difficult few years.

‘The Quiet Man’ has had just five fights in three years since picking up a mystery ear injury which he believes caused high-profile defeats to the likes of Ammeth Diaz, Derry Mathews, Terry Flanagan and Tommy Coyle.

However, he hopes those problems are behind him after specialists discovered his injuries were due to an old grommet left in his ear as a child.

“It’s been frustrating and it’s cost me a few years in my career,” Gethin told uko-boxing.com, ahead of his March 19 comeback bout on Black Country Boxing’s ‘Cool Hand And The Gang’ show at Walsall Town Hall.

“I’m fighting Fonz Alexander and to be honest it’s about getting back in that ring, testing out the ear and making sure it’s properly sorted. Then I haven’t got to worry about it when I get into bigger fights.”

Gethin fights in his hometown for the first time since that loss to Diaz in 2013, knowing that it’s make or break as he moves up in division from lightweight to super-lightweight (formerly called light-welterweight).

“Depending on how the next few fights go, I’ll find out if I’m coming to the end of my career or moving onto bigger and better things,” he added.

“I want to go for the British title and I’d like an eliminator in my next fight if possible.

“I was struggling a bit to make lightweight so that extra few pounds will allow me to concentrate more on tactics and technique in training, rather than just shifting weight.”

Gethin co-headlines the March 19 bill, sponsored by Grosvenor Casino Walsall, alongside the likes of Luke Paddock, Jason Welborn and Lennox Clarke.

Tickets are priced at £30 (general admission) and £60 (VIP Ringside), and can be purchased by calling 0845 111 2900 or directly from any boxer on the bill.

The weigh-in and aftershow take place at Grosvenor Casino Walsall, Bentley Mill Way, Walsall WS2 0LE (just off junction 10 of the M6). GC Walsall will have a presence at the Town Hall on the evening and have linked up with local taxi firm, Yellow Taxi’s, to supply a number of free taxi’s to take guests from the Town Hall to the casino post-fight.
