Welborn Sets Sights On Lord Lonsdale Strap

Jason Welborn

Jason Welborn has his sights set on making it ‘third-time lucky’ and finally landing the British title – in honour of his late mother.

The Rowley Regis warrior has twice fallen just short against world-class opposition in his bid to win the revered Lord Lonsdale belt, losing gallantly against classy welterweight Frankie Gavin before a somewhat controversial loss to light-middleweight king Liam Smith.

However, after a rousing performance against three-time world title challenger Matthew Macklin last year, Welborn is ready to finally nail down the British crown in 2016.

“I’ve been on the brink for a few years now,” Welborn told uko-boxing.com ahead of his March 19 ‘keep busy’ outing at Walsall Town Hall.

“I’ve come so close. But I’m not going to let that get me downhearted.

“If anything, it spurs me on even more. And I’ve got even more motivation than ever now because I’m fighting for the memory of my mom, Chris, who passed away last year.”

Welborn has operated at both welterweight and light-middleweight in the past but plans to compete at the former as he seeks major honours.

“If I can get enough time in the gym over the summer then I’m looking at welterweight,” he said.

“It makes sense because I’m too big and strong for most at that weight and it makes for better fights. I’ll fight wherever I need to in order to get my shot.”

Welborn takes on Yorkshire’s Adam Jones on Black Country Boxing’s ‘Cool Hand & The Gang’ show – sponsored by Grosvenor Casino Walsall – this weekend.

The likes of Luke ‘Cool Hand’ Paddock and Martin ‘Quiet Man’ Gethin also feature.

Tickets are priced at £30 (general admission) and £60 (VIP Ringside), and can be purchased by calling 0845 111 2900 or directly from any boxer on the bill.

The weigh-in and aftershow take place at Grosvenor Casino Walsall, Bentley Mill Way, Walsall WS2 0LE (just off junction 10 of the M6). GC Walsall will have a presence at the Town Hall on the evening and have linked up with local taxi firm, Yellow Taxi’s, to supply a number of free taxi’s to take guests from the Town Hall to the casino post-fight.
