Shannon Briggs: Scam or the Man?

Shannon Briggs

Former world champion Shannon Briggs is in the UK and is knocking on the doors of British heavyweights. The American chose to invade the country to call out Brit’s Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and David Haye. Bringing with him his famous catchphrase “Let’s Go Champ”, it seems Briggs has moved on from his former victim of abuse Wladimir Klitschko. Now chasing the big fights in the UK, the big question does the 44 year old still have a fighting chance or is he strictly here for money and fame?

A former WBO World Heavyweight Champion, there is no doubt Shannon once had the skills to possibly defeat the men he is now calling out. However, now into his 24th year as a professional and recently contesting in his 67th bout, Brigg’s ambitions have to be questioned. The man taking the most wrath from Shannon’s recent outbursts is Londoner David Haye. Having recently made his return to the ring and craving for a fight with recent WBA title winner Lucas Browne, it is unknown whether any formal talks are under way between the two. Obviously the Browne fight brings bigger rewards for Haye with a belt on the line, but Brigg’s brings his worldwide known name and reputation meaning both parties could take home a formidable purse. With Joshua taking on IBF champion Charles Martin on 9th April and Fury tied up in talks with Klitschko, the Hayemaker is the likeliest opponent for the “The Cannon”.

“Lets Go Champ” were unsurprisingly the words called by Briggs when arriving at Buckingham Palace. Speaking of visiting many other destinations in Britain such as Manchester, the “Peoples Champion” is certainly willing to travel anywhere to get his wish of a big fight in the UK. With his boisterous and animated charisma, Briggs will be hoping to attract the media’s attention on his quest to beat the best of the British giants.
