In the main event on Friday night at the D.C. Armory in Washington, DC, the flashy and controversial four-division world champion Adrien “The Problem” Broner (32-2, 24 KOs) won by technical knock out in round nine over Ashley “The Treasure” Theophane (39-7-1, 11 KOs). Broner was able to hurt Theophane on numerous occasions but did not get the stoppage until 1:10 of round nine. Ashely Theopane was tough and did have his moments but Adrien Broner was just the better man in the ring. At the post fight interview, Broner tried to call out Floyd Mayweather at ringside by saying that he had to see him even if it was sparring. Mayweather and Broner had been close friends for quite some time now but the two traded words and insults over social media and interviews. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Adrien Broner on the win: “I got to thank everyone who came out tonight because without you I couldn’t have done this. Thanks to people in Cincinnati who are watching at home, but DC is my second home.
“When people fight me, they come with their ‘A’ game, and he came with his ‘A’ game. But even his ‘A’ game wasn’t enough tonight.
“As you know, I’ve been going through a lot and for me to come in here and bottle everything up and do what I did, I want to give myself a pat on the back.
“I’m a man, but at the end of the day, somebody that I look up to, someone that I admire took the chance to do and interview and talk bad about me. I’m a man – Floyd has got to see me.
“I come from nothing. I’m talking about water and Cornflakes. And I would never let a man disrespect me like that. So you gotta see me. I don’t care if we’re sparring or if we’re fighting, let’s get it on.
Ashley Theophane on the defeat: “I thought the stoppage was premature because I thought I was in the fight. Me and Broner were going at it. It looked like he was starting to get tired because he started to move around and wasn’t able to stay there with me as much.
“I thought the fight was back and forth and I think the next four rounds would have been the same.
“No way should that have gotten stopped. It’s a shame the referee did that. I was telling him ‘I’m okay, I’m okay’ then he waived it off. I don’t know what he was thinking.”
Lightweight prospect Robert Easter Jr. (17-0, 14 KOs) had a devastating knockout over former world champion Algenis Mendez (23-4, 12 KOs). The time was 2:43 in the fifth round. Mendez was a game opponent and this was not an easy win for Easter but he is definitely a force to be reckoned with in the lightweight division.
Undeafeated lightweight Gervonta “Tank” Davis (15-0, 14 KOs) scored a sixth round TKO over Guillermo Avila (16-6, 13 KOs). Avila suffered a cut beneath his left eye in round four and was dropped by Davis at the end of round five. The referee stopped the fight at :29 in round number six. It was a very good win for Davis.
Total attendance in the building is 8,172. Sold out crowd.
