Dennis Hobson has shed light on the recent cancellation of Liam Cameron’s fight with Jahmaine Smyle.
Smyle was scheduled to defend his English super-middleweight title against Cameron at the Sheffield City Hall on May 29 but, in the week leading up to the show, the contest was shelved.
Hobson, who manages the ‘Steel City’ fighter Cameron, has now revealed there is no rift between the pair and detailed that ‘Cannonball’ will move up in weight to secure title opportunities.
“It wasn’t any one person’s fault,” explained Hobson, “but, amongst other things, there was a lack of communication on both parts, which meant Jahmaine didn’t get his allocation of tickets in time and not as many were sold as we needed for the fight to go ahead.
“I don’t like to pull any contests off a bill but it’s just not possible in this current climate to keep running shows at a loss. It was obviously disappointing because the show was originally built around Liam’s fight with Smyle. Thankfully though it was a decent little show anyway with some good fights on and the feedback from fans has been great.
“We’ve had a chat with Liam since, who was obviously disappointed and upset. He maybe wasn’t aware of the full picture and was perhaps a bit naïve afterwards with some of his social media comments. We’re back on track now though and are looking to move him up to light-heavyweight where we think he’ll be easier to match and push for titles.
“In terms of the immediate future, I’ve been doing some work with my pal Jaffa (Phil Jeffries) in the Northeast and we’re looking to get Liam on the Summer Rumble show at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland on July 10.”
