New York State Boxing Hall-of-Famer, promoter/manager Dennis Rappaport, of Queens, will be Ring 8’s guest speaker at this Thursday night’s (June 16) monthly meeting, starting at 7 p.m. ET, at Plattduetsche Park Restaurant, located at 1132 Hempstead Turnpike in Franklin Square, New York.
“Dennis was recently inducted into the New York State Boxing Hall of Fame as a Class of 2016 member,” Ring 8 president Bob Duffy said. “Dennis is an entertaining speaker with so many incredible stories from his days as a boxing promoter and manager. He handled some of the best fighters in the business and his publicity stunts are legendary. It’s going to be a memorable evening for our members.”
Rappaport entered boxing in 1976 as co-manager with his partner, Mike Jones, of Gerry Cooney, Howard Davis Jr. and Ronnie Harris. Rappaport and Jones, eventually known in the media as the “Wacko Twins”, largely for the way they promoted Cooney, culminating with Cooney’s epic showdown with world heavyweight champion Larry Holmes. Rappaport went on to manage or promoter many great fighters, including five world heavyweight champions — George Foreman, Tim Witherspoon, Trevor Berbick, Tony Tucker and Oleg Maskaev – as well as others such as Hall of Famers Roberto Duran and Hector Camacho, among the more notables.
