Tom Stokes is hoping to celebrate the New Year in style as he is plotting to secure a shot at the Midlands Middleweight Title writes James Eley.

The unbeaten fighter wqas due to appear on Black Country Boxing’s ‘High Stakes’ show, sponsored by Grosvenor Casino Walsall, at Walsall Town Hall on Saturday, 24th September but will now fight later in the year as he sets his sights on a title shot.

“I have had a chat with Errol Johnson (my manager) and we would like a shot at the Midlands Title. The title is vacant at the minute and I think I’m ready for a shot.

The 21-year-old was last in action in July when he defeated the Gloucestershire based Lewis Van Poetsch on points.

After a summer spent ticking over, Stokes is now looking forward to getting back in the ring after being inspired by the Olympic boxing in Rio recently.

“I really enjoyed watching the Olympics this year,” he added. “I made sure I watched as much as I could. Obviously as a boxer whenever you watch other fights it makes you want to get back in the ring competing. Hopefully when I am back I will be able to do my own thing and get the result.”

Although Stokes no longer appears on ‘High Stakes’, a host of local fighters remain set to feature.

Newark’s former kickboxing world champion, Chad ‘2 Slick’ Sugden, is also back in action as he looks to secure a fourth straight victory since turning professional this year.

Midlands duo Paul Holt and Louis Fielding will go toe-to-toe for the vacant Midlands Area Super Featherweight Title at the top of the bill whilst unbeaten Old Hill lightweight, Manny ‘Pac Man’ Zaber, also features.

Wolverhampton cruiserweight, Joshua Burke, is in action and Coventry cruiserweight, Dilly Singh, and West Bromwich welterweight, Tommy Loach, both make their debuts.

Undefeated Birmingham super welterweight, Luke Heron (Walker), completes the card.

Tickets are priced at £30 (general admission) and £60 (VIP Ringside), and can be purchased by calling 0845 111 2900 or directly from any boxer on the bill.

The weigh-in and aftershow (over 18’s only) take place at Grosvenor Casino Walsall, Bentley Mill Way, Walsall WS2 0LE (just off junction 10 of the M6). Grosvenor Casino Walsall will have a presence at the Town Hall on the evening and have linked up with local taxi firm, Yellow Taxi’s, to supply a number of free taxi’s to take guests from the Town Hall to the casino post-fight.
