Nigel Benn talks Connor, State of the UK Middle and Super Middleweights and Eubank

Nigel Benn made his return to U.K. shores last week with one of his first stops being Runcorn in the North West of England.

The former two weight World Champion, who was accompanied by former European Bantamweight Champion Spencer Oliver and World Middleweight King Darren Barker, took the gloves off at an event presented by Tony Murrell as he discussed his son Connor, the possibility of boxing Chris Eubank for the third time and who the best is at Middle/Super Middle in Britain at the moment.
Benn’s son Connor has recently signed with Matchroom Sport and those down at the Matchroom HQ seem to think a lot of the now Essex based Welterweight. Nigel gave his view on his son and how far he can go in the professional ranks.
“Connor is doing brilliantly at the moment. He’s doing really well. We have sparred together, I know how good he is and I truly believe he’ll be a world champion.”
It is well known not just in the boxing world but in the British Sporting world that Benn has had a long standing rivalry with Chris Eubank Sr, with their still being a demand by some for a third fight. The now Australian based Benn gave his opinion on the possibilities of a third fight happening with Eubank Sr.
“Honestly I think it’s more likely to happen than not. There’s too much money on the table for it not to happen. If it doesn’t happen it’ll be down to the Eubanks. It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen Chris Sr lose a lot of money for an unexplainable reason.”
Nigel Benn rose to prominence as he ruled at both Middleweight and Super Middleweight in the 80s and 90s, becoming a two weight world champion. The two division title holder gave a short and sharp answer when asked who the best fighter was, pound for pound, out of the current crop of British Middle and Super Middleweights.
He said, “Callum Smith.”
The event which was a fabulous night throughout was organised by Runcorn’s Tony Murrell and also featured former IBF World Champion Darren Barker and European Bantamweight Champion Spencer Oliver. Murrell who’s events seem to out do themselves each time, gave his take on the night’s proceedings and his plans for the future.
“I thought the event went really well. Nigel Benn is an absolute gentlemen and I am very proud of bringing a Boxing Legend to my hometown.”
Murrell continued, “Our events must be doing something right as our next event in March with Ricky Hatton has already nearly sold out of VIP tickets just days after being announced!”
“Following the Hatton event, we will also have an event with Sugar Ray Leonard!”
