18-year old boxing prodigy Devin Haney’s path continues Sep. 23 vs. John Delperdang

Devin Haney

The quest for championship greatness continues for young boxing prodigy Devin Haney.

On Sep. 23, Haney (16-0, 11 KO’s) will face off with Escondido’s John Delperdang (10-3, 9 KO’s) inside of the Agua Caliente Casino in Rancho Mirage, California.

Haney lives and trains out of Las Vegas Nevada and he has captured the boxing the world by storm due to his tremendous skill. At just 18 years of age, Haney is wise beyond his years inside of the ring and already has a wealth of amateur experience as well as having sparred and worked with several top names in Las Vegas.

Haney had his professional debut in December 2015, stopping Gonzalo Lopez in the first round in Tijuana California. Haney has thus far fought ten times in Mexico, as well as Las Vegas, Baton Rouge, Philadelphia, and Washington.

For several years Haney captured the attention of the fight scene in Las Vegas back when he was an amateur. At just 14 years of age, he was already ranked as one of the top amateurs in his weight class and his skills were easy to spot.

While living in training in Las Vegas, Haney has worked with some top-notch trainers including Floyd Mayweather Senior, Dewey Cooper, and Mike McCallum. He has also frequented different gyms, such as the Mayweather Boxing Club, Roy Jones Jr. Fight Academy, City Boxing Club, and others.

His sparring sessions have also been memorable, as he has worked with the likes of Shakur Stevenson, Shawn Porter, Gervonta Davis, and even recently went six rounds with Floyd Mayweather prior to his battle with Connor MacGregor this weekend in Las Vegas.

What makes Haney unique is that he is not signed to any top promoter at the time. He has advanced his career this far pretty much on his own, with his father Bill Haney guiding him.

It’s also common to see Haney travel to find work in the sport, as he often goes up to Oakland and has even had advice given to him from light heavyweight champion Andre Ward.

One of the reasons why Haney is so popular is how well he connects with the masses. All you have to do is check out his Instagram page and his big following to see just how many people are keeping up with him.

Whether it’s him driving a new custom car, or being in the gym for his next match, Haney represents what it means to be young and going after your ambitions, hence his nickname “The Dream”.

In facing off with Delperdang, it represents a slight step up in class for Haney. Delperdang’s only losses thus far have come to quality prospects Jose Miguel Borrego and Rickey Edwards, as well as to fringe contender Henry “Hank” Lundy.

Thus far, if there has been any slight criticism in Haney’s progression, it may be that there are no real notable names on his roster thus far. Through 16 fights, Haney has mostly faced off with inexperienced prospects or Mexican journeyman.

Still, Haney is very young and it’s nice to see his career moving in the right direction.
