Yordenis Ugas continues to boost career with narrow decision victory over Thomas Dulorme

Tough Cuban Yordenis Ugas continued his impressive winning streak over the weekend, narrowly defeating Puerto Rico’s Thomas Dulorme by way of ten-round unanimous decision inside of the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., as part of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor undercard.

Ugas, 20-3 with 9 knockouts, has been on an impressive streak, having won his last five bouts. In that stretch, the record of Ugas’ opponents has been 92-11, with two of the wins being against undefeated fighters in Jamal James and Bryant Perrella. The Dulorme win itself marks the biggest win of Ugas’ career, as he inches closer to contender status in the welterweight division.

What is also impressive about Ugas’ streak is just how busy he has been, with all of this, the five wins, happening over the course of a year.

Speaking of the fight with Dulorme, Ugas gave his respect. The two men both had their share of success, with Ugas dropping Dulorme in the second round and getting knocked down himself in the seventh.

“It was a great fight. I knew that Dulorme had a great camp preparing for Shawn Porter, so when I knocked him down I figured he would get up. I only had nine days to prepare for this fight so I had to be smart and not waste anything,” Ugas said.

“When I got knocked down I knew I had to get up and show heart and guts. That was the only way to do it,” he said of his valiant effort.

Ugas has been training hard in Las Vegas at the Salas Boxing Academy with the likes of Salas himself, and recently Jorge Carpetillo and Joel Casamayor. He trains hard and often puts pressure on his opponents.

Against Dulorme (24-3, 16 KO’s), Ugas came forward but couldn’t break his foe down completely.

“I hit him with some really good shots but he got up. He’s a warrior. When you take big fights on short notice it’s a little tougher but I’m happy I got the victory,” Ugas said.

From his perspective, Dulorme took up some issues with referee Vic Drakulich.

“I thought the referee lost the fight for me. I didn’t agree with him. I didn’t think I was throwing low blows. I thought it was clean,” said Dulorme, who lost a point for low blows in the match.

Dulorme also acknowledged just how tough of a match if was vs. Ugas.

“It was a good fight. It was a very tough fight. I came to fight and I took him seriously. I kept working. It was up and down, but I kept working. I thought he was tired late in the fight so I tried to increase the pressure. But it was hard because the referee didn’t let me work on the inside like I wanted to.”

Dulorme is signed to Mayweather Promotions and insists he is going to keep working at everything.

“I’m going to get back in camp and keep learning, I’m not happy, but I’m going to keep learning. I got off the floor today and kept fighting and I’ll keep doing that in my career.”
