Championship Boxing coming to Wales, Merthyr Leisure Centre; Prices start from £10

Sanigar Events are proud to present Land of Dragons a night of Championship Boxing at The Merthyr Leisure Centre on Saturday October 14th.

Undefeated lightweight prospect Gavin Gwynne tops the bill and gets the chance to box for his first professional title when he challenges Henry Janes for the vacant Welsh Lightweight Championship. Janes is on a strong run of form and has taken the scalps of three undefeated prospects in the past year including fellow Welshman Jason Sillet. Janes’ last contest was a closely fought encounter with ‘Genius’ Joe Murray away from home in Manchester. He has mixed at a much higher level than Gwynne having shared the ring with former World Title challenger Kevin Mitchell and British Champions Martin Lindsay and John Simpson.

15 months after turning professional Gwynne who has won all six of his professional contests is ready to make a step up in class and believes his time is now. Gavin trains out of the famous St. Joseph’s Gym in Newport under the tutelage of the highly respected Tony Borg and is confident that training alongside such a high pedigree of fighters will help him achieve major professional honours:

“I have been waiting for this chance to shine since I turned professional and I am ready to show the fans what I am capable of. Fighting for the Welsh title in Merthyr against a boxer as tough as Henry Janes will bring out the best in me and I think that everyone will be in for a great fight on October 14th.”

Olympic silver medallist Fred Evans made a successful start to the pro ranks in May and is keen to build momentum in his career with another win in Merthyr Tydfil. Evans will provide the chief support contest and will be hoping to fastrack to major domestic titles in the near future.

Highly touted light heavyweight Nathan ‘Thunder’ Thorley will also feature on the card. Thorley’s undefeated record of seven fights with four knockouts shows that he means business everytime he steps into the ring and Thorley promises to be the next Welsh prospect to challenge for a domestic title. Fellow Cardiff boxer JJ Evans will make his seventh appearance as a professional and aims to extend his own undefeated streak.

Popular Bridgend super-lightweight Richie Canning and Swansea fan favourite Kristian Touze travel back to Merthyr. Both men have had strong wins at the venue and will be putting the work in to achieve more of the same as they continue their journey through the pro ranks.

Exciting middleweight prospect Daniel Barton from nearby Newport will be bringing his army of fans, Barton featured in a fight of the night contest last time out in Bristol resulting in a draw with Anthony Fox. This time around he does not want to leave a decision to the judges and has been working on power and fitness with renowned coach Tony Borg at the St. Joseph’s Gym.

Rangy welterweight Ricky Rowlands from Caerphilly and skilful lightweight Callum Busuttil both trained by former Commonwealth Champion Jamie Arthur complete the line up of the action packed card.

Promoter Jamie Sanigar is pleased to be back in Merthyr for the second time this year;

“It is great to be bringing another Welsh title fight back to the home of Welsh boxing in Merthyr Tydfil. Gavin has been chomping at the bit for his chance to show us what he can do and I think this is the perfect fight for him at this stage. Henry Janes represents a big step up in class and Gavin will have to be at the top of his game if he wants to become the Welsh Champion on October 14th.”
