It wasn’t Lee Selby’s night as he lost his International Boxing Federation World Featherweight title to Josh Warrington.
Selby won the title in 2015 against, Evgeny Gradovich and defended it four times before losing it on Saturday.
It was Selby’s second career loss. His first loss came at the start of his boxing career, in his fifth fight at the hands of Samir Mouneimne.
An upset Lee Selby took time out after the fight to send a message to his following.
“I would like to thank everyone for all their support this week. I was Britain’s longest reigning World champion, but it came at a price and I felt that in the ring last night.
“I’ve been making the featherweight limit for 10 years, but it was just one fight too many at that weight and my performance badly reflected that.
“Congratulations to Josh Warrington and I wish him the best in the future.
“I will enjoy the summer with my family and then sit down with my team to plan the exciting new challenge of becoming a two weight world champion.”
Trainer, Tony Borg also shared a message post-fight to his followers.
“Lee Selby is a genuine Warrior. It wasn’t your night tonight, three cuts hindered your vision and your boxing.
“Perhaps it’s time to move up a weight, your heart alone must be near 9 stone. You remain a credit to your family, your team and your country. Enjoy your well-deserved rest.
“Last night’s loss, hurt, and will continue to do so for some time, but Selby will rest and return revitalised and hungry for a World title at new weight.”
After the fight, Borg travelled to enjoy a belated honeymoon with wife Emma Borg.
RingNews24 would like to send our congratulations and wish Tony and Emma good luck in their marriage.
