Undefeated lightweight champion Mikey Garcia 38-0 (30) has questioned his former foe Adrien Broner’s approach to business after “The Problem” released details of his contract negotiations with Matchroom Boxing’s Eddie Hearn on his social media account last week.
The 28-year-old Broner 33-3-1 (24) posted details of Hearn’s $6.5 million three-fight offer in Instagram along with the hashtag #SlaveDeal. He also claimed the offer was less than another offer he received from Roc Nation.
But 30-year-old Garcia, who scored a comfortable 12-round points decision over Broner last July, said that the polarising Cincinnati fighter was being disrespectful and misunderstanding the way business negotiations work.
“As any businessman and any promoter does, they’ve got to try and start a little lower. It’s part of negotiations. Any negotiations, you never do the first offer. They go low, you got to go high and make it happen,” Garcia told ES News.
“But Adrien Broner shouldn’t have posted that. I don’t think he should have because it’s not good business.
“You’ve got to be respectful, you’ve got to keep that confidential. You can say that you got a proposal, but you don’t disclose everything.”
According to the details of the deal posted by Broner, Hearn was offering three fights starting in September with the first bout earning the former super featherweight, lightweight, junior welterweight and welterweight titleholder $2 million, increasing by $250,000 for two subsequent fights tentatively scheduled for March and September 2019.
Hearn’s offer comes after the British promoter signed an eight-year $1 billion deal with streaming service DAZN that calls for 16 fight cards in the United States per year, along with another 16 in the United Kingdom each year.
The cashed-up Hearn is looking for high-profile fighters to fill his roster.
“I’m not sure AB knows what an NDA [non-disclosure agreement] is. My Phone has gone crazy since he posted the offer,” Hearn told his own followers on Twitter.
