Unbeaten lightweight contender George “Ferocious” Kambosos Jr 14-0 (8) has joined Manny Pacquiao’s training camp ahead of the former eight-division world champion’s challenge for the WBA welterweight title against Lucas Matthysse 39-4 (36) on July 15 at the Axiata Arena in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The flashy Australian has recently relocated to the United States to trainer under Pacquiao’s strength and conditioning coach Justin Fortune in Los Angeles, California. Earlier this month the 24-year-old Kambosos Jr made his USA debut for New York-based promoter Lou DiBella, knocking out Jose Forero in a single round.
“He (Kambosos Jr.) is among the sparring partners. He will join the two or three Filipinos, whatever. A couple of bangers and good fast boxers, we will mix it up,” strength and conditioning coach Fortune told the Manila Times at the Elorde Gym in Pasay City.
“He’s a good sparring partner because he’s fast and he throws a lot of right hands and a lot of right hooks that’s what Manny needs to look at, his speed. He keeps Manny thinking the most, and he keeps Manny on his toes because he is fast,” he added.
While Argentinean banger Matthysse has an impressive knockout ratio of 82%, Fortune insists that Pacquiao 59-7-2 (38) doesn’t need to be facing heavy punchers in sparring.
“Wear and tear in sparring we don’t need. We just have to bring his targeting and head moving, make him think and that’s it. We don’t need to go to war in sparring,” said the Australian coach who once faced Lennox Lewis in the pros.
Kambosos, ranked number 11 by the WBO in the lightweight division, was part of Pacquiao’s training camp for his last fight when the Filipino superstar lost a surprise decision to unknown Australian Jeff Horn at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium in front of 51,000 fans last July.
