Canelo Alvarez Continues To Trade Words With Golovkin’s Trainer Abel Sanchez

On Saturday, September 15, the boxing fans across the world will get a rematch they have been waiting for for nearly a year when middleweight king Gennady Golovkin and former junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez meet inside of the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

We all know the roller coaster that these two have put us through this year. First, Canelo tested positive for the illegal substance Clenbuterol, a drug known for helping with weight loss. Alvarez was suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and saw his May rematch with Golovkin canceled altogether. Golovkin instead stopped former title challenged Vanes Martirosyan in Southern California on that May date, in the second round.

Meanwhile, Golovkin and his trainer, Abel Sanchez, have been expressing their frustration with Alvarez, with “GGG” even claiming Canelo is a dirty fighter and bad for the sport. Sanchez has mainly taken criticism of the way Alvarez fought in their first meeting, even claiming he ‘ran’.

Sanchez and Golovkin, who has stopped 34 of his 39 opponents, claim to have a ‘Mexican style’ when it comes to fighting, but Alvarez takes offense. Last week he hosted some media in San Diego and expressed his thoughts.

“The Mexican style isn’t like that,” Alvarez said in Spanish. “I don’t know where they get that, about how the Mexican style is to go forward and to punch and get punched. That’s not the Mexican style.”

Golovkin recently hosted a small media day as well, and Sanchez opened up again on the way Alvarez fought one year ago.

“He fought 40-some fights in a particular style and, all of a sudden, he changes it to be more of a boxer that’s running away,” Sanchez said, as quoted by the LA Times. “I think that what he promised the fans before that fight, and what he’s promising the fans before this fight, is completely different than how he fought the fight.”

Alvarez has been seen recently in a stream of updates on Instagram, pounding away on the heavy bag and ripping hard combinations on the body bag. Canelo definitely is looking focused, but who knows what kind of firepower he will be able to bring against Golovkin.

For Sanchez, he doesn’t want any broken promises.

“At least try to knock the man out. Don’t throw punches in desperation. I think that if he tries to knock Golovkin out, they’re going to be within each other’s range and somebody’s going to hit somebody. Maybe he does have the power to knock Golovkin out. I don’t know. But he has to try.”

The rematch is definitely heating up, and because of everything that has happened in the wake of their first, this should be a very fun fight to watch and one full of drama and fireworks.
