Daniel Jacobs insists he would knock out Canelo Alvarez

The boxing world is still reeling from the epic, back-and-forth battle between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin on Saturday night. Inside of the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., Alvarez was able to prove his worth by winning a narrow unanimous decision over Golovkin, who never stopped trying.

With the win, Alvarez collects the WBA and WBC middleweight titles as well as the crown of the division’s lineal champion. Golovkin obviously took the loss hard but he has nothing to be ashamed of. Scorecards were close, with two favoring Alvarez at 115-113, and the third a draw at 114-114.

Afterwards, people were split as to who really was the evening’s true winner. Champions such as Shawn Porter, Terence Crawford, and Manny Pacquiao gave Golovkin the edge but others swayed to Canelo. Even Golovkin’s trainer Abel Sanchez seemed to hint that his man may have not done enough to secure the victory in the final round.

One person who was watching in Las Vegas was former WBA champion Daniel Jacobs, who seemed to think his former foe did enough to grab the win. Golovkin barely squeaked past Jacobs in March of last year, via close unanimous decision Speaking to Fight Hub, Jacobs expressed his view.

“Good fight. I thought GGG won (by) two rounds, at least, I think,” Jacobs said. “I don’t know, it’s just, I’m not, I wasn’t being biased, but I felt like Golovkin was a lot busier than Canelo. Even though Canelo still had his spurts where he looked good and there was a lot of close rounds. People say it could’ve went either way. I gotta go back to the tape, really review it, really study it, and make my decision then. But off my initial reaction, I thought Golovkin won.”

Count Jacobs in the minority of people who doesn’t not want to see these two fight again, at least not right away. Because, simply put, the Brooklyn fighter feels like he is the one deserving of a showdown with Canelo.

“Come on, hell no, I don’t want no trilogy, man!” Jacobs exclaimed. “Let me get my opportunity!”

No surprise, but Jacobs feels that he would definitely have the recipe to end Canelo’s streak and hand him a loss. Even by knockout.

“I’d stop Canelo, I’d knock Canelo out,” Jacobs said boldly. “It don’t matter what round. Put him in there and I’ll knock him out.”

Jacobs will return to the ring next month on HBO, where he face off with top contender and big puncher Sergiy Derevyanchenko on Oct. 27. If vacant IBF middleweight title, the one vacated by Golovkin, will be on the line that evening and the fight will go a long way to telling us what Jacobs can bring vs. Canelo.

It’s a good time to be a boxing fan and a fighter, especially if you are competing around 160 pounds.
