In a big move for his career, 20-year old Ryan Garcia (16-0, 13 KO’s) has made some huge changes in his career by officially joining the training camp of Eddy Reynoso, known best as the head trainer of WBC middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.
Garcia is a big star in the making, evidenced by over one million followers on social media, and took to his Twitter account to share the news with his fans. Garcia has received a lot of buzz lately after some verbal sparring wars with Gervonta “Tank” Davis as well as TMT fighter Rolando Romero.
But inside of the ring, it was obvious that Garcia needed some improvement. Garcia’s most recent fight, a unanimous decision victory over Carlos Morales, showcased some of his vulnerabilities.
Reynoso, who has been with Canelo for many years, will now look to make improvements to the young prospect.
“I have followed him and I know he has a lot of talent and potential,” said Reynoso in an ESPN interview. “We will start training together [on Thursday].”
Garcia will be joining Canelo in camp, as the biggest star in the sport prepares for his Dec. 15 match vs. WBA super middleweight champion Rocky Fielding.
“When I see a fighter, I analyze him and his fights, and that’s where I see what I can work on with a fighter,” Reynoso said. “I’ve had a few meetings with Ryan, and he comes off as very disciplined, very happy and dedicated. But he’s a fighter who needs to work on how to go forward, how to go backward, his defense and counterpunching. He has some boxing bad habits we need to take away. We are going to work hard and do as best as we can.”
Despite tasting a little bit of fame as just a teenager, Garcia acknowledges that he needs improvement and paid a close watch to the work of Reynoso.
“He is the best option to help me get to the next level,” Garcia said to ESPN. “Reynoso has loads of experience. He has Canelo, and he knows how to handle big fights. He can bring everything we were missing. I said why not pick one of the best trainers in boxing?”
Even Garcia’s promoter, Oscar De La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions, admits that Davis would have been too much for his fighter at this stage, calling the champion from Baltimore a “beast”. Instead, Garcia will stay in his lane and look to improve.
“I’m ready to get better,” Garcia said. “I want to be the best so I am ready to do anything. I’m up for it, and I definitely will be paying attention to everything and listening to everything he says.”
Interestingly, it was Alvarez’s second fight with former champion Gennady Golovkin that won him over and made him really notice Reynoso.
“We watched the first Canelo-GGG fight and we saw what he improved on in the rematch. It made sense to go forward with Reynoso. I like his style. Canelo is a counterpuncher, a boxer, and that’s what I am. I felt like Reynoso is the perfect fit for me,” said Garcia.
