Michael Amoo-Bediako talks launch of the Streetwise Foundation in Ghana and IBF Lightweight Mandatory Challenger Richard Commey
Streetwise Management Chief Michael Amoo-Bediako has launched a fantastic initiative which entails providing less fortunate areas of the world with boxing equipment as part of The Streetwise Foundation.
The Foundation with the help of Lou Di Bella, Everlast and Boxfit UK amongst others will be suppling quality boxing equipment to the boxing gyms in Jamestown, Ghana in what will be the first of many places helped by the Streetwise Foundation.
British based Michael Amoo-Bediako opened up on why Jamestown, Ghana was the first place to be helped by the Streetwise Foundation.
He said, “Jamestown is a fishing town situated in Ghana’s Capital Accra. In Jamestown, there is a small village area called Bukom. This area is very unique as it is the home of Ghanaian boxing and has produced more world champions per square foot than anywhere else on the planet.
“The likes of Ike Quartey, Joshua Clottey, David (D.K Poison)and Alfred Kotey, Joseph Agbeko, Nana Konadu and of course the Professor himself Azumah Nelson all hail from this area, so I believed it was the ideal place to start giving back to communities and helping boxing continue to grow in this area through the Streetwise Foundation.”
Michael Amoo-Bediako is the manager of current IBF Mandatory Challenger Richard Commey, whom he discovered in this area as an amateur in 2010. Commey, who now trains in Brooklyn, New York under the guidance of Andre Rozier is a perfect example of what Boxing can do for anyone in life if they work hard and dedicate themselves to their craft.
Michael elaborated, outlining his plans for the future of the Streetwise Foundation alongside Richard Commey.
He said, “The area of the World that we have launched the Streetwise Foundation is where I first saw Richard Commey back in 2010 as an
“I have seen and experienced first-hand what is needed to help the children and the budding boxers in the area to help realise their dreams and to have the opportunities that Richard has had to be successful in this sport.
Michael continued, “This area of the World has not been lost on Richard as well as he has often spoken to me about what he wants to do after finishing his career and helping the community where he grew up is a top priority for him.
“Setting up the foundation and having Richard Commey as its global Ambassador will give us the opportunity to spread the word and help
this community so more World Champions can be created and others can follow in the footsteps of the champion past and hopefully Richard Commey himself.
The Streetwise Foundation’s aim is to provide equipment like boxing gloves, wraps, boots, punch bags, so the local communities have the basic tools to ply their trade with a vision to then obtain funds for schooling equipment and hopefully if successful we can spread reach out to other parts of Ghana as well.”
