Junior welterweight contender Alex ‘El Cholo’ Saucedo 28-0 (18) is ready to claim the WBO 140-pound title from reigning champion Maurice ‘Might Mo’ Hooker 24-0-3 (16) at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City on Friday, November 16.
Victory will be the culmination of a lifelong dream for the 24-year-old Saucedo, who was born in Meoqui, Mexico but resides in Oklahoma City.
“Winning a world title in front of my fans will mean the world to me,” Saucedo said. “That’s something I have been dreaming of since I started boxing, and now that the opportunity is here, I’m going to train hard and become a champion.”
The entertaining Saucedo was one-half of a Fight of the Year contender when he engaged in a bloody seven round brawl with Australian bruiser Leonardo Zappavigna 37-4 (27) at the Chesapeake Energy Arena on June 30.
“My last fight in Oklahoma City was a war. I believe I learned a lot in that fight,” Saucedo said. “[Trainer Abel Sanchez and I] went back to look at the tape. We learned that I need to use a lot more movements. We saw a lot of things that I need to work on, and we have done so. I have been training very hard. We will be ready for November 16.”
Newly-minted world champion Hooker represents another step up in class. The 29-year-old from Dallas, Texas travelled to Manchester Arena in Manchester, England in June to claim the vacant WBO 140-pound title against previously undefeated ‘Turbo’ Terry Flanagan 33-2 (13) by split decision.
Saucedo says he knows what he’s in for against Hooker and is looking forward to improving on his last performance.
“I believe Maurice Hooker is a smart and strong fighter,” Saucedo said. “I have to be smart in the ring. I have to go in there with everything that I know.”
