Ben Davison says Tyson Fury versus Anthony Joshua more likely than Deontay Wilder rematch

Tyson Fury’s trainer Ben Davison believes a fight with unified heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua is more likely to happen before a rematch with WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.

Wilder and Fury fought to a disputed draw in December. The WBC ordered an immediate rematch of the fight but negotiations broke down when Fury opted to sign a lucrative deal with US broadcaster ESPN. Wilder’s fights are telecast on rival network Showtime.

“Tyson’s shown that he will always step up to the mark and take the risk. Who else has done that out of them two [Wilder and Joshua]? Nobody,” Davison told iFL TV.

“When you discuss with [Wilder’s team] about coming to us, the conversation goes dead. But hopefully we can get those fights made.

“At the end of the day, they was trying to negotiate with Wilder’s team, it didn’t look like that we was gonna be able to get them on our platform right away so we couldn’t afford to sit still and we had to get something done.

“I think potentially there could be more of a chance, don’t hold me to it, of Tyson and Joshua at the end of the year.”

But Davison didn’t rule out the Wilder-Fury rematch entirely.

“Listen, them two could go and fight. They could change their mind, anything could happen. One of them could get beat. You never know,” he said.

Fury is scheduled to face little-known German Tom Schwarz in Las Vegas on June 15. The match-up has been widely panned by fight fans who see it as a step backwards for the ‘Gypsy King’.

But Davison says the undefeated Schwarz 24-0 (16) was selected largely because of his height.

“A few names got sent across and we had a look,” he said. “Obviously we don’t want to make the adjustment of somebody big to somebody small, to have to go back to somebody big.

“’Cos the other two elite fighters that we’re looking to make fights with are obviously six foot six plus.

“So that was a criteria that we wanted somebody big.”
