Crawford, the 31-year old WBO welterweight champion, has expressed his desire for a showdown with IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr., but it’s a fight that doesn’t look to be happening anytime soon due to the politics of the sport. Crawford is promoted by Top Rank (ESPN) while Spence fights under the Premier Boxing Champions banner (SHOWTIME and FOX).
Still, the show must go on for one of the sport’s most talented fighters, and with his April 20th victory over Amir Khan having happened (Crawford won via sixth round TKO), he will be looking for the biggest option possible. The Spence fight may never happen, but here are a few names that are at least worth discussing for Crawford’s return bout later this year.
5. Kell Brook
A former champion at 147 pounds himself (Brook beat Shawn Porter to win the IBF title in August of 2014), Brook has expressed his interest in a match with the Nebraska fighter. Part of the reasoning might be the fact that for a long time Brook and Khan were being mentioned for a big fight, but with Crawford victory over Amir, that all but nullifies that option. Instead Brook looks to have his eyes set on Crawford’s WBO belt.
