What is next for Canelo Alvarez? As of July 2019, Canelo Alvarez has planted himself as one of the best and most prolific athletes that the sport of boxing has to offer.
Set to turn 29 years old on the 18th of this month, Alvarez is still in his physical prime and in the midst of a great run in the sport. The Mexican superstar is coming off a close unanimous decision victory over Daniel Jacobs on May 4th that saw his record rise to 52-1-2 (35 KOs) and the public is wondering what is next for Saul.
According to recent reports, there were three opponents being named as a possibility for Alvarez’s hopeful return in September.
Canelo Alvarez brings millions to bookmakers with each of his fights. betting-universe.com can help you with the best bonus codes, tips and advice to help you make that winning bet.
One of them was Gennady Golovkin, a man he has already faced twice, grabbing a controversial split-draw their first fight and winning a majority decision in their rematch last year. Golovkin and Alvarez always make for a great fight, and with both men being signed to the DAZN streaming service, it would be easy to make a trilogy bout.
Another name being mentioned is WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev, who restored some lost luster on his career this past February by outpointing Eleider Alvarez over 12 rounds in their rematch. Alvarez had stopped Kovalev one fight prior. Kovalev showed improvements in the rematch and his size and range could very well give Alvarez trouble.
WBC super-middleweight champion Callum Smith is young and unbeaten and has also seen his name in the mix towards facing Canelo this year. Smith is promoted by Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing, the main promoter for DAZN, and that fight too would be a fantastic matchup.
WBO middleweight champion Demetrius Andrade has been calling for a showdown with Alvarez and/or Golovkin, but to no avail. Andrade too is undefeated, and he has been very active as of late, defeating contender Maciej Sulecki last weekend in his third fight in eight months. Andrade’s skills and unorthodox style would present a different kind of puzzle for Canelo and maybe it’s a fight he will one day land.
And if there is a dark horse in all of this, it looks to be WBO junior middleweight champion Jamie Munguia, who has been rumored as a September option for both Canelo and Golovkin.
There was talk of Munguia meeting two-division champion Jessie Vargas soon, but a Canelo fight would be a far bigger career payday for the 22-year old. Munguia may be a little inexperienced compared to Alvarez, but he has shown himself to be a competent action fighter who makes for entertaining fights.
Some question how healthy Alvarez’s right knee is, as last year he had cosmetic surgery on it to repair internal damage he had suffered over the years. It hasn’t seemed to slow Alvarez up inside of the ring, but we will see over the next few fights if there is any long-term damage.
The crusade towards finding Alvarez’s next opponent has surely been drawing headlines and people are expecting announcement soon. One thing remains is that Alvarez is the sport’s biggest cash cow at the moment and his name comes along with a lucrative payday for future opponents.
