What you need to know about Daniel Dubois injury
Daniel Dubois suffered two blows on Saturday night in a fight against Joe Joyce; the first was suffering a defeat in the match, while the second was succumbing to an injury in his orbital socket, which is said to be damaged, and nerve damage to his left eye, according to Sarah Shepherd.
Having dropped an upset performance on Saturday night math, Joyce moved a step closer to the world heavyweight title after defeating Dubois, who ended up taking a knee in the 10th round while failing to beat the count.
What Happened?
The 23-year-old Greenwich-born boxer has been able to defeat 14 out of 15 of his opponents and was tagged the favorite to win the fight and secure a world title just as Oddschanger Tipster had formerly predicted for the young boxer. But unfortunately, he was unable to achieve anything against Joyce, who was able to make his power count in the fight.
The Greenwich-born boxer’s left eye was already seen to be extremely swollen in the middle stages before it eventually closed. He suffered another jab on his already-injured eye in the 10th round of the fight and ended up sinking to the canvas on a knee concluding the game.
How serious is the Injury?
Following the conclusion of the fight, the British boxer was immediately rushed to the Moorfields Eye Hospital with The Athletic confirming that Dubois has indeed suffered a broken orbital socket and nerve damage to his left eye during the match.
Dubois was not discharged immediately as he spent the night at the hospital before being released on Sunday morning. The report has it that, he has been scheduled to see a specialist on Monday to know if the injury will be requiring surgery or not.
Speaking after the match, Dubois said to the media: “He caught me with another jab to the eye. I could hardly see out of it. I can’t explain it. I’m a tough guy and I will come again.”
Carl Frampton, who has been able to notch two-weight world championship titles for himself, accused the 23-year-old boxer of quitting.
He said: “I think that we all like Dubois. He’s a likable guy. But if it is someone we didn’t like, we would say he quit there.
“I think he quit there.
“I have to be brutally honest here. Let’s call a spade a spade, he took a knee from a shot in the eye. His eye was a mess, his eye was closed.
“But I get dragged out of the ring, I wouldn’t take a knee.
“I had Dubois a point up at the time of the stoppage, it was a close fight.
“You have to call it what it is; Dubois quit. But, he is a young kid and he can still come back.”
The injury is quite similar to the one-handed to British boxer Kell Brook in consecutive defeats from the hands of Gennadiy Golovkin and Errol Spence Jr. So Dubois is most likely expected to bounce back after recovering from this injury.
What Next?
After securing the British, European, and Commonwealth trophies by defeating Dubois, Joyce now moves to challenge for a world title in 2021.
In the contract for the fight, it is understood that a rematch clause was not included and both sides are okay with the idea, while promoter Frank Warren will be happy to see a rematch happen between the duo when Dubois fully recovers from the injury.
