Jeff Fenech believes his rising featherweight star Brock Jarvis 19-0 (17) is ready for a world title shot after demolishing rugged Kiwi Nort Beauchamp 18-4 (3) in six rounds at Exhibition Park in Canberra, Australia on Friday night.
The 23-year-old Sydneysider put on a clinical display, breaking down the tough Beauchamp with a relentless assault to the body and head in their scheduled 10 round contest.
Southpaw Beauchamp, 35, showed huge heart to stay on his feet but in the end referee Will Soulos intervened to stop what was quickly becoming a one-sided beatdown.
Soulos explained his decision to Beauchamp: “I asked you to show me something, mate. You didn’t show me anything. You’ve taken too many shots.”
Jarvis was leading 50-45, 50-45 and 49-46 on the judges’ scorecards at the time of the stoppage.
“Nort was putting good pressure on. He said he was going to make me fight his fight and he did, so credit to him,” Jarvis said after the fight. “He’s tough, but towards the end I was hurting him with some good shots.”
The Jeff Fenech trained fighter is currently ranked number seven by the IBF and number 12 by the WBO at featherweight.
The IBF title is currently vacant after Josh Warrington 30-1 (7) opted to vacate the belt earlier this year. WBO champion Emanuel ‘Vaquero’ Navarrete 32-1 (27) will defend his championship against Christopher Diaz 26-2 (16) at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida on Saturday night.
Fenech is ready to pull the trigger on a world title shot as soon as the opportunity presents itself.
“Definitely so,” Fenech said when asked if Jarvis is ready for a title shot. “We had a bit of a mixed preparation, but he was still able to come out and do what he did today.”
“He’s had 13 amateur fights, he’s had 19 pro fights, he’s been boxing since he was 16. This kid will be world champion very soon.”
Fenech labelled Beauchamp the toughest test to date for his young charge.
Promoter Dean Lonergan was equally bullish about Jarvis’ future.
“Whether Brock Jarvis can come back down to featherweight and stay there I don’t know, but he’s certainly making splashes around the world,” he said.
“Bob Arum from Top Rank is taking notice, so very excited for tonight.”
Beauchamp, who fights out of City Kickboxing in Auckland, paid credit to his conqueror after the fight, citing his conditioning as one of his greatest attributes.
“Brock is an incredible champion,” Beauchamp said. “He hits hard with both hands, and he’s got a special motor.
“I wasn’t out, but I was sitting there trying to reload my clip… and I looked up and I was waved off.
“But that’s because he’s so relentless. I was still in the fight, but he just keeps punching.
“He doesn’t look scary, but he hits hard.”
