In a real coup, promoter Dennis Hobson beaten off the competition to sign up one of the UK’s best young prospects.
Mark Jeffers has been hailed as a nailed-on future super middleweight star after turning pro at 18 and racing to 11-0, alongside claiming the Central Area crown in his last fight.
A former two-time Junior ABA champion, Jeffers’ fan-friendly style has earned him a strong following. Don’t be fooled by the three KO wins on his record either, the 23-year-old has explosive power in both hands and will end many more fights early in the years to come.
Trained by former world title challenger Michael Jennings, and managed by the hugely experienced Kev Maree; Mark says he is delighted to have signed a promotional deal with Dennis Hobson’s Fight Academy – and to be appearing on new boxing channel Fightzone TV – and wants to move onto the next level immediately.
Jeffers gets the chance to impress Fightzone viewers on May 28 in Sheffield when he takes on well-regarded Czech fighter Tomas Bezvoda, 9-14 (6) in a very decent test. Headlining on the night will be Rotherham’s Kash Ali versus Czech Republic fighter Tomas Salek for the IBF European Heavyweight belt.
“I can’t wait to get started,” enthused the Chorley fighter. “Dennis is a big name who has promoted his fighters very well. He took Ricky Hatton and Clinton Woods over to America, and if I can do half as well as those boys then I’ll be buzzing. Fightzone sounds really exciting too. Hopefully it’ll be massive and will be great for British boxing and the fans.
“This last year has been frustrating. I’ve spent the time working in the family business [making phone cards] which has given me lots of motivation because it’s made me realise how lucky I am to be a pro boxer. I’m definitely ready to move up the levels now. It’s been a fair while since I last boxed [January 2020], so I’ll get this eight-rounder under my belt, and then I’ll fight anyone. I’ll leave it up to my team, but I’d fight for some kind of European title, or the British, which I believe I’m good enough to win in my next fight.”
“He’s the current Central Area champion, but he’s outgrown that title because there’s nobody in the area that will fight him,” explained manager, Maree. “He’s so well known in the Northwest, and it’s time for the general public to get to know him now. He’s an absolute superstar in the making, one of the most exciting fighters I’ve been involved with.
“I wanted to make sure we got the right fit for him in terms of a promotional deal, people who had the same vision as me who want to build him up into a worldwide star. Dennis shares that vision. He’s ticked all the boxes at this stage of his career. He’s trained by Michael Jennings who has started to mould him into the complete fighter. He’ll be headlining events over the next few years, he’s incredibly exciting and will become a household name. We’ll go into international territory with him now to start preparing him for world level.”
Promoter Dennis Hobson stated: “Jason McClory, our matchmaker, has been in the game for years. He really rates Jeffers and thinks he could genuinely go on and win a world title. His fight against the Czech will be a good marker for him, and I’m looking forward to seeing him perform.”
