New Boxing Game Coming – But Will Floyd Mayweather Be Excluded?

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has revealed that his likeness will be in the upcoming boxing game ‘Esports Boxing Club.’ The game will be released on multiple gaming platforms including Playstation 5 and PC.

It has been approximately a decade since ‘Fight Night Champion’ was released. That game turned out to also be the last in the Fight Night gaming franchise. But it seems that boxing is about to return in a big way for players. And Alvarez, also known as “the face of boxing” will be one of the key fighters in ESBC’s roster.

Alvarez said on Twitter:

”The face of boxing” is coming to PC, PlayStation and Xbox. Find me in the brand new boxing video game @ESBCGame.

Other fighters already confirmed are the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson, Terence Crawford, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. Also included are some of the sport’s more obscure names, past and present, for balance and variety. Many more are set to be announced.

However, I have noticed that there is one glaring omission. At least so far. And that is a certain Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr.

Perhaps the developer has already secured the five weight class champion. But what if he doesn’t? That does make me wonder. And for what possible reason?

While Saul Alvarez is a great name to have secured, Mayweather is one of the most notable boxers of the last twenty years who has smashed multiple boxing records. It would seem odd if he was excluded. I know it is early to speculate. But no announcement at this point does raise concern to a degree.

Let us hope that Mayweather, if he has been approached, has not demanded too much of an asking price to the point where he cannot be afforded. He would only be doing himself a disservice in terms of not seizing an opportunity to stay marketable, especially when there is the fact that he has a lot of interest in fighting on the exhibition scene at present.

As for how the game appears presentation wise, ‘Esports Boxing Club’ is looking promising. At least graphically. The movements of the fighters look a little robotic and stiff from what I have seen of the very limited footage. But with no current release date confirmed, I am sure there is plenty of time to iron out those kind of things. The control scheme for ‘Fight Night Champion’ was a little frustrating, so I hope the scheme for ESBC will appeal a lot more to me.

While the politics of boxing is preventing us from seeing some of the best fights that could be made right now, at least fans have something to look forward to in the coming months!
