Errol Spence says Americans need to support Deontay Wilder over Tyson Fury

By now everyone has witnessed what happened during the recent press conference for the third fight between Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder.

The stare down was pretty epic. The two men locked eyes for over five minutes and neither one really seemed to budge.

And there is definitely some bad blood in the air.

The two men fought to a draw in their first fight in 2018. And in February of last year, Fury scored a dominant seventh round TKO victory.

Following that defeat, many of Wilder supporters I have come forward to accuse Fury of cheating. Water himself has had a lot to say about the rematch and even replaced longtime trainer Mark Breland.

Wilder is now working with Malik Scott, a former opponent of his.

When it was time for Wilder to speak at the press conference, he chose not to say anything, further adding mystery as to where his head is at at this moment.

One thing that is for certain is that there is going to be a lot of support coming for Wilder. Some of our support is coming from current IBF/WBC welterweight champion Errol Spence.

During a recent conversation with Barbershop Conversations, Spence explained why he’s backing Wilder.

“I’m rolling with Deontay. How can I roll with a dude across the pond?” Spence said. “I’ve been watching Deontay’s [training] videos and he’s been looking sharp. Now he’s throwing combinations to the body. He has somebody his height [former heavyweight contender Malik Scott]. Hooks to the body. Hooks to the head. 1-2-3’s and things like that. Uppercuts. A lot of things that he was missing. A lot of times he was just a 1-2 fighter. It’ll be good to see him able to switch things up. I’m hoping Deontay Wilder gets his payback and just dues.”

Spence is a student of the game himself and really seems to believe that Wilder is getting his old form back.

“It looks like he’s been training hard and staying focused and getting in shape,” said Spence. “I wish him the best. I hope he gets the big knockout. I heard him saying he’s going for the kill. I’m always rooting for Deontay, especially against a guy from across the pond. I don’t see how other people go for another countryman. I don’t get it, because at the end of the day Tyson Fury is going for his guys. He’s not going to be for the American fighter. I feel that should be the same way with us but it’s never like that. Americans don’t rock with Americans. It’s backward for Americans.”

As for Spence, he has a big assignment of his own coming up. He will be facing off with legendary Manny Pacquiao on August 21 in Las Vegas.
