Undefeated middleweight Amilcar Vidal 13-0 (11) was taken the distance for just the second time of his short pro career when he scored a 10-round majority decision against experienced campaigner Immanuwel Aleem 18-3-2 (11) at the AT&T Stadium in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday night.

The fight was the opening bout of the Showtime card headlined by the undisputed junior middleweight title fight between WBC, WBA and IBF boss Jermell ‘Ironman’ Charlo 34-1-1 (18) and WBO kingpin Brain ‘El Boxi’ Castano 17-0-2 (10) that ended in a split draw.

“It was a great fight against a really tough opponent, but the fruits of my labour alongside my brother during training camp paid off and I never lost my cool,” said Vidal.

“I believe I was a fair winner, but I am not here to argue about the score. I may have lost my way in a couple of rounds, but I regained control of the fight and I have as much as I took.”

The 25-year-old from Uruguay who boxes out of Coachella, California, had to work hard for the win, taking control in the middle rounds before Aleem, 27, from Richmond, Virginia rallied in the seventh and eighth frame. The final two stanzas saw great two-way action with both boxers having moments of success.

Judges Ruben Carrion and Glen Rick Crocker both saw the fight for Vidal 97-93 while judge Anthony De Los Santos had it even at 95-apiece.

“Like I told you before the press conference, it’s about going step by step,” said Vidal. “We took a major one tonight and now my promoter will let me know what’s next. I’ll be ready. Uruguay can rest easy knowing Amilcar Vidal is here to stay.”

Vidal’s previous three wins – all by knockout within two rounds – came against undefeated prospects but Aleem represented another step up in class.

“I have a great opponent in front of me,” Vidal said before the fight. “He has a good resume in his own right. So I’m focusing on what I can do, because we’ve put in all the hard work in the gym and you’ll see it all in the ring on Saturday.

“With the effort that I put into training camp, you can expect that I’m going to leave the ring victorious Saturday night.

“I feel great, absolutely motivated and ready to give 100% on Saturday night. We know that we have a quality opponent in front of us, but I have proven my worth and my skills. That’s the reason I’m here.

“We had a great training camp. It was hard and complicated at first to be so far away from Uruguay, because I’m very close to my family, but that’s part of the job. I am more and more motivated each day and I know that my family is supporting me from home. They are proud of me, for sure.

“I hope to be able to honour my country and raise our flag up high. Both of Uruguay’s world champions, Cris (Namos) and Cecilia (Comunales) called me to wish me all the best and tell me they believe in me too.”
