Mexican superstar and WBA,WBC,WBO super middleweight king Canelo Álvarez and undefeated IBF super middleweight world champion Caleb “Sweethands” Plant made their official grand arrivals in Las Vegas on Tuesday afternoon.
The two men will meet in a huge fight that headlines a SHOWTIME PPV this Saturday, November 6 in a Premier Boxing Champions event from the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
And now that fight week is officially kicked off, Canelo and Plant inch closer and closer to their respective date with destiny. In one corner you have Canelo, the face of boxing, looking to solidify his legacy even more. In the other we have the brash, undefeated Plant, who has overcome much in and out of the ring, and he will be eyeing a big upset this weekend.
Canelo (56-1-2, 38 KO’s) knows all too well the importance of this fight and what it means to his overall standing in the sport of boxing. Since his defeat to Floyd Mayweather in 2013, Alvarez has gone undefeated, scoring victories over the likes of Gennady Golovkin, Miguel Cotto, Erislandy Lara, Billy Joe Saunders, Daniel Jacobs, and many other respected prizefighters.
Plant seems to offer at least a much different puzzle, due to his youth and overall boxing ability. Canelo knows what comes next.
“It means a lot to me to win this fight for my legacy,” said Canelo. “That’s why we are here. He’s a good fighter with a lot of skills, but that’s nothing new for me. Saturday night, I’m going to make history.”
Plant (21-0, 12 knockouts) has just as much belief in his own abilities. So far in his career, Plant’s significant, defining moment has been hit title-winning effort over Jose Uzcategui in January of 2019 in a fight many didn’t think he would win. Plant shocked many with his dominant performance that night, and is expecting to do the same on Saturday.
“I’ve dedicated my life to this sport,” said Plant. “I’ve sacrificed a lot. We’re happy to be here, but we’re not just happy to be here. We are here to win those belts and become the first undisputed super middleweight champion of all time.”
Plant also holds victories over Vincent Feigenbutz, Mike Lee, Caleb Truax, and Rogelio Medina. His resume certainly isn’t close to Canelo’s when it comes to experience, but it’s hard to think of a fighter in the sport who believes in himself the way Plant does.
So, what will happen on Saturday?
It seems to be here that Canelo is banking on his big-fight experience, and power, to win this over. Canelo has stated time and time again that this is personal, a notion proved true when the two men nearly came to blows at their press conference.
Canelo has also mentioned his legacy a lot heading into this contest, so you can tell he isn’t taking Plant lightly.
Plant meanwhile is obviously looking to bank on his boxing savvy and skills to win this contest. It’s truly one of the best fights of the year and perhaps the most significant in many ways.
