WBO middleweight champion Demetrius ‘Boo Boo’ Andrade 31-0 (19) lived up to his pre-fight prediction, dropping Jason Quigley 19-2 (14) three times en route to a second round stoppage at the SNHU Arena in Manchester, New Hampshire on Friday night.
The 33-year-old southpaw from nearby Providence, Rhode Island had it all his own way, dropping Quigley in the first and twice more in the second to force the stoppage at the 2:24 mark.
Two-weight world champion Andrade successfully defended his 160-pound world title for the fifth time with his knockout victory over the 30-year-old Irishman.
“I did what I said,” Andrade said after the fight. “I felt good and looked good. I delivered the message, which was stop Quigley, and I’m on to the next. Who’s next?
“I wanted to get in there, put some damage in early and that’s exactly what I did. He felt the first liver shot and it was time to eat.
“You guys wanted knockouts and I delivered.”
Andrade has been criticised in the past for dropping his opponents early before letting them off the hook. That wasn’t the case this time around.
“I’ve been training to be destructive,” said Andrade before the fight. “Someone is going to stop this fight. Put your house on it.
“I look to give everybody a beating in a sense, to outclass them. Going in and knocking people out is cool but I also like to get rounds in and show my skill level.”
Andrade has long called for fights against the biggest names in and around his division. He spent much of the lead-up to the fight calling out newly-minted undisputed super middleweight champion Saul ‘Caenlo’ Alvarez 57-1-2 (39).
Other names on his radar include WBC middleweight champion Jermall Charlo 32-0 (22), IBF boss Gennadiy Golovkin 41-1-1 (36) and WBO number one contender Jaime Munguia 38-0 (30).
Promoter Eddie Hearn is keen to see these fights happen.
“Fans should get him these big fights,” the Matchroom Boxing boss said.
“What is going on with boxing when you’ve got two great, undefeated American world champions in the same division and they won’t share the ring together? There’s one reason: Jermall Charlo.
“Jaime Munguia was the WBO [junior middleweight] world champion. He moved up to 160, the WBO said, ‘You’re mandatory to Demetrius Andrade,’ he said, ‘Not yet, let me get a couple of fights at middleweight.’ He’s had four fights at middleweight! Now he’s saying, ‘Hopefully I get an eliminator next.’ Why? He can fight Demetrius Andrade next, a straight shot at the world title.
“Gennadiy Golovkin fighting (Ryota) Murata, if he wins that fight, he has to fight Andrade in a unification. I don’t know what else to say or do. We’ve been here a thousand times before. And I so desperately want to see this guy get his defining moment.”
