Patrick Mailata wins first fight in nineteen months

Patrick Mailata

Patrick Mailata stepped in the ring for the first time last weekend since July 2020 when he took on journeyman Terrell Jamal Woods. Mailata won the fight by Majority Decision (2x 40 – 36, 38 – 38).

Patrick Mailata (4 – 1 – 0) started off his pro career in 2018 where he started getting pretty active in 2019, However, since the pandemic he has had fewer fights. We haven’t seen him enter the ring since July 2020 when he suffered the first loss of his pro career. Patrick took on Journeyman Terrell Jamal Woods (27 – 49 – 9) who has fought 85 fights in his career. Before this fight, Woods have been coming for some impressive wins, including a decision win over JD Chapman (30 – 0 – 0), a knockout win over Helaman Olguin (9 – 3 – 0) and a Knockout win over Tony Lopez (1 – 3 – 0). Woods recently won his first boxing title against Helaman Olguin when he won the ABF USA Heavyweight title.

The fight starts off more of a feeling out stage in the first round. Eventually, Mailata started landing heavy shots against Woods. Woods kept his guard up while he was waiting too long. In the last minute of the round, Woods started throwing back and landing clean shots himself. Mailata did throw a couple of wild hooks which Woods made them miss. (Mailata 10 – 9 Woods)

Into the second round, Mailata jabs woods occasionally landing a right. Eventually, Mailata started landing some heavy shots to the body and the head but Woods’s guard up is hard to breakthrough. Woods probably only landed one good shot but the rest was Mailata round. Both boxers already look tired. (Mailata 20 – 18 Woods)

The third round starts off well with Woods with Mailata looking like he might be in trouble, but after a push, it was back in Mailata control. Despite Mailata being on the back foot, he is landing his jabs, but Wood slowly takes control in the centre ring. Mailata lands a heavy uppercut putting Woods in trouble. Woods recovered well and both trade heavy blows. It was a close third round, however, Woods edged it to win the round. Both boxers are extremely tired at the point. (Mailata 29 – 28 Woods)

In the final round, Mailata started jabbing before landing three good body shots before Woods starts swinging heavy shots of his own. After both boxers holding and leaning, Mailata gets back to landing more heavy shots. Both boxers are getting dirty, with Woods punching Mailata on the leg and Mailata looks like he landed back of the headshot. Mailata is incredibly tired, his hands are down by his side keeping his distance and throwing when Woods gets in close. The last 10 seconds in the fight and Mailata lands his flury of heavy shots to end the round. Mailata despite being tired, obviously won the last round. (Mailata 39 – 37 Woods)

Patrick Mailata walks away with the win with two judges giving him all four rounds and one judge scoring the contest a draw. Mailata weighed in at 147 kgs, which is the heaviest of his professional career.

Hopefully, he is training more regularly and we hope to see him in the ring again soon. His social media has been quiet as of late. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any information on when we see him in the ring again or if he is still with the management team he belongs to. Lets hope Mailata has a busy 2022.
