Conor Benn vs Kell Brook talks hit a snag, Amir Khan considering rematch

Talks are underway to match Kell Brook 40-3 (28) with Conor Benn 20-0 (13) but promoter Eddie Hearn isn’t entirely confident he will be able to make the fight.

The 35-year-old Brook is fresh off his sixth-round knockout victory over Amir Khan last month while Benn, 25, last saw action in December when he stopped Chris Algieri in four.

“I’ve been talking to Kell Brook and his dad,” the Matchroom Boxing boss told iFL TV. “I won’t go into it too much, but we’ve made them a significant offer to fight Conor Benn.

“I think with Kell, if he fights again, he should and would do it sooner rather than later. Once he starts enjoying himself and relaxing and the weight goes back on, it becomes more of a mission.

“Right now, he looks like a million dollars, he’d be ready to fight in June. But at the same time, I think it’s going to take a ridiculous amount of money to get him back in the ring because he doesn’t really need it.

“I reckon he’s thinking to himself, ‘Well if the money’s crazy, I’ll do it. But if not, we’re happy.’ It’s important that they’re happy and I understand their position.

“For us, we just tried to say, ‘If you’re ready to go in June, we’ll hold our April 16 fight’. But that doesn’t look to be the case. It looks like we’ll progress with April 16 and we’ll carry on the talks with Kell.

“Hopefully, we can find some middle ground to make the fight in September or October. We’d love to make the fight.”

Meanwhile, word out of the Khan camp is that they will be seeking a rematch with Brook despite the one-sided nature of their grudge fight.

“It wasn’t the result we wanted,” Khan’s brother Haroon Khan posted to social media alongside a photo of both of them.

“No excuses but that isn’t the way AK was that night but the heart he showed and what he gives to the fans is what matters.

“Bring on the rematch and let’s get things changed and get the win.”

Khan has a rematch clause in his contract for the Brook fight but his promoter Ben Shalom said he would be surprised if he exercised that right.

“It’s not something we would advise and it’s something we don’t think Amir should do, but he does have that option. We have heard murmurs from his camp that he was jet lagged and didn’t take Kell too seriously,” Shalom told talkSPORT.

“I don’t think it will happen, but it’s not something in our control. It is something we agreed to before the fight, something Kell agreed to before the fight and he has three weeks to decide if he wants to fight him again.

“Amir got demolished in that fight and I would expect that to happen again. But technically he would be entitled to that rematch.”
